Ben Carey is a Sydney-based musician specialising in the performance of contemporary music. In addition to the performance of 20th and 21st century solo and chamber repertoire for the saxophone, Ben works regularly with young composers in premiering new works for the saxophone in a variety of contexts – performing solo, chamber and mixed works with live electronics. Ben has been playing the saxophone since the age of nine, and since graduating from his Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2005, he spent two years in France studying saxophone and contemporary chamber music at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux. In recent years Ben has developed a keen interest in the performance of music for saxophone and live electronics, and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Technology, Sydney where he is researching and developing systems for live interaction between instrumentalists and computer.
