    I see...and what is a pre sound level check? Is it something as simple as getting the talent/band to speak or play, then adjusting the gain levels until there's no clipping in the channels?

    I'll see if I can find 5-10 seconds of room tone. How would I use this to pull out the hiss? In Soundtrack Pro, I presume?

    I just did a bit of searching around, and found some that some lapel mics are over $600! Definitely over my budget at the moment. I'm not sure how I would do a sound test either; I create promotional videos and concert recordings for people as a side business, so I have a single-camera setup (Canon Vixia HF100) and use Final Cut Studio to edit. Wouldn't you require a computer on location to transfer and convert the video for a sound check?
