Women now know the sex of the fetus they carry; and with selective abortion, selective implantation, or newly developing technologies, they can actually choose the sex of the baby they will bear. How does this change women's experiences of pregnancy? What are the consequences of sex selection for the families involved, and for the rest of the world? Looking beyond the well-known sex imbalances that occur 'out there,' what is happening in American society as fetal sex becomes increasingly one more consumer option?

Barbara Katz Rothman, Professor of Sociology at the City University of New York, is on the Faculty of the Health and Society Program of the Charité -Universitätsmedizin in Berlin, and has served as a Visiting Professor at the Universitat Osnabrueck in Germany, a Fulbright Professor at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and a Leverhulme Professor at Plymouth University in the United Kingdom. Lately Atheism has been chiefly associated with science, but through history doubters and atheists have had an equally extraordinary relationship with the arts. Many of the great poets wrote many of the greatest poems about the empty sky and the sublime, horrible, majesty of being human. Life is difficult enough without trying to go it alone: we need our history. The next wave of religious doubt should be a poetic atheism that is keenly aware of our past.

Jennifer Michael Hecht is the author of three history books and two volumes of poetry. Her bestseller Doubt: A History (Harper One, 2003) demonstrates a long, strong history of religious doubt. Hecht’s The End of the Soul: Scientific Modernity, Atheism, and Anthropology (Columbia University, 2003) won the Phi Beta Kappa Society’s 2004 Ralph Waldo Emerson Award “for scholarly studies that contribute significantly to interpretations of the intellectual and cultural condition of humanity.” Her most recent book, The Happiness Myth (Harper One, 2007) brought a skeptical eye to modern wisdom about the good life. Hecht’s poetry books are The Next Ancient World (which won the Poetry Society of America’s first book prize), and Funny which Publisher’s Weekly called “one of the most original and entertaining books of the year.” Her prose and poetry appear in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Washington Post. Hecht earned her Ph.D. in the History of Science from Columbia University in 1995 and now teaches in the Graduate Writing Program at The New School University.

Cast: Ethical Culture Society Bergen
tag:vimeo,2009-06-13:clip5140717 Ethical Culture Society Bergen Jennifer Michael Hecht: The Triumph of Poetic Atheism (5/31/2009) atheism, poetry, philosophy, science, history, civilization, belief, religion, Hecht Child Survivors of the Holocaust (5/24/2009) Sun, 31 May 2009 07:02:34 -0400 http://vimeo.com/4925652 Ethical Culture Society Bergen

A panel program
Panelists: Carl Hausman, Goldy Hess, Evelyn Ripp
Moderator: Dr. Joseph Chuman

Cast: Ethical Culture Society Bergen
tag:vimeo,2009-05-31:clip4925652 Ethical Culture Society Bergen Child Survivors of the Holocaust (5/24/2009) holocaust, ethical culture, panel, discussion, ethics, france, germany, history, world war II, Jewish, Jews, survivor Jan Meshon, FreeThoughtAction : Reaching the Tipping Point (5/17/2009) Sun, 24 May 2009 09:03:11 -0400 http://vimeo.com/4810505 Ethical Culture Society Bergen

Why I’m Optimistic About the Next 20 Years

Why freethinkers will grow in size and influence in America and what we can do to help that happen sooner rather than later.
