ABOUT FAIRY TALES
Fairy Tales Presentation Society is a not-for-profit, charitable organization located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada that celebrates and showcases queer culture and artists. Through our artistic adventures the society strives to provide a respectful venue for members of all communities to celebrate queer culture.
We run the OUTReels Diversity Education Program year-round, travelling into the regional community using film as educational vehicles. OUTReels provides a safe space to discuss issues like bullying, faith and sexuality, LGBT elder care and the importance of international pride movements and LQBT human rights issues. OUTReels is sponsored by the RBC Foundation and we enjoy many presenting partners throughout the year. We visit youth groups, schools, and organizations in the health, social and arts sectors.
Fairy Tales also runs the annual Youth Queer Media Program (YQMP), entering its fourth year in 2014. Youth take part in a workshop and mentor-driven program teaching them the skills to produce a film from story development through to shooting, editing and marketing. The works are premiered at the festival each year in a gala setting. Thanks to our fantastic lead partner, First Calgary Financial as well as our producing partner, EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society, and the National FilmBoard of Canada (NFB).
Fairy Tales strives to be a social convener, building the Calgary queer community around the arts and in support of artists. Fairy Tales also showcases visual artists, performers, musicians, actors and dancers with our biennial Q the Arts Cultural Festival.
ABOUT THE FAIRY TALES QUEER FILM FESTIVAL
We present an annual festival of independent films made by and/or about the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two-spirited and queer community. This important annual event reaches a broad range of audience members looking for entertaining, challenging and innovative films. Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival is the largest queer film festival east of Vancouver and west of Toronto. The festival enjoys many fantastic sponsors, partners, volunteers, supporters and donors. We thrive thanks to amazing community support!
The Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival began in 1999, under the umbrella of the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF), and was incorporated January 30, 2004, as the FairyTales Presentation Society. A governance board runs the society with two staff members, volunteers and contract staff on an as needed basis. Fairy Tales programming has more than doubled since 1999, growing in length significantly and featuring over 70 works of various genres and lengths, visiting filmmakers, artist talks and panels.
