Ken Hughes

Since 2000, I've been a research fellow with the Presidential Recordings Program of the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.
I study Richard Nixon's White House tapes, produced by the voice-activated recording system the President had secretly installed in the Oval Office (and elsewhere) in February 1971. By then Nixon had decided to time America's military withdrawal from Vietnam to the 1972 presidential election -- a decision that is the subject of my web documentary-in-progress, Fatal Politics.
I've written about the Nixon and Kennedy White House tapes in the New York Times Magazine, the Washington Post Op-Ed page, the Boston Globe Magazine and other publications.
