My Masters of Digital Media major work. Although it is open for interpretation, the work represents the intertwining life cycle of a $10 bill and a male. The bill returns to the male at different stages of his life to show how he reacts to money. Although the character realises that there is more to life than money towards the end, the character is actually in an endless and inescapable cycle, as he shows his son (which really is himself) how to plant a money tree.

The Worker

This film explores the idea of “work” in disparate contexts. The juxtaposition of verite footage of a worker, Don Jose, with detached voice-over explaining the particulars of “knowledge work,” forces a reconsideration of work in different parts of the world.

The film is part of larger documentary film project currently in post-production entitled “A las Calles” (“To the Streets”) that documents the lives of working and street children and their families.

This video was shot in a few hours at Ashland State Park in Massachusetts. The weather was finally beginning to warm up and people were out enjoying the outdoors.

I brought my PMW-EX1 camcorder with the Letus Extreme, a Vinten Vision 3 tripod, my homemade dolly system, three lenses and two filters.

I used PVC pipe and my dolly for the slow slides and trucks. I do have to be careful because even a speck of dirt makes the camera vibrate in the dolly system.

The three lenses I used was a Sigma 18mm f3.5, a Nikon 24mm f2.8 and a Nikon 300mm f4 telephoto. I used the telephoto lens to get tight shots of people fishing from across the lake. I also used it to get shots of the turtles basking in the sun.

I recycled a few shots from previous trips to the lake. The macro shots of the Garder snakes was from a video I shot a month ago called “Snake Eye View”. I used a Nikon 55mm f2.8 macro lens for these intimate snake shots.

I used a Tiffen 52mm circular polarizing filter to help with the sky and water reflections. This made the water a deep dark hue and created a very blue sky. I also used a four point start filter for the sun smear you see at the end of the video.

I edited this in Final Cut Pro and color graded with Magic Bullet Looks. I over-saturated the colors in the video.

Bad:
- I still didnt zoom in enough on the focus screen. But, I kind of like the effect.
-Too much noise- was not shooting correctly...I was in cinemode at 3.something aperture on the camera.
-Still not setup with rails on this video (they came in today!!!!! may 7th)

Good:
- I think the shots are real sharp.
- No gain (I think) on the indoor shots
- Crane tripod tip via Eugenia's blog
- 28mm lens is AMAZING.

What do you think?

Notes:

I crunched the blacks/shadows too much- but it is a dark song :) and the sun was almost set. Please- all criticism/suggestions/feedback WELCOME!

Jay Boy's No Budget Tutorials 02: Smooth Panning

1) I use two thin, stretched out rubber bands (about 2 inches when relaxed) work the best, a gossamer connection between you and the tripod
2) In general cranking the pan resistance up yields the best results.
3) The smoothest pans happen when the tension is enough that the ruuber band is stretched to 75% of it's max (about 8-10 inches) when panning.
4) The rubber band also allows the head to slowly come to stop as the band contracts after you've stopped panning.
5) You can bundle several around the pan arm on your tripod and never be without.
