What about ...
Any chance to get Vimeo on iPhone ?
Soxiam Staff
we're big fans of iphone too and we're still considering it. in short, the issue we are trying to resolve is this: encoding the videos to look good and optimizing them for displaying in iphones is very different from the settings we need to use for optimizing for browser display.

Maybe once Apple and Adobe become friends. We need them to get along so we can handle Flash on our iPhone. Then the next request would be a Vimeo upload App!

Personally, I don't care as much about watching the Vimeo videos on my iPhone. However, with the new 3GS, I'd really like to upload directly to Vimeo. I'm ending up having to use my old YouTube account - which I don't like.

You can get an application called pixelpost for the Iphone 3GS that will let you upload clips from the iphone to vimeo. It is in the Apple Appstore.
It's basic but it works. It also uploads to about 70 other sites; flickr etc etc

I would like to have a way to show Vimeo videos on the iPhone, too. It should be implemented in a way like YouTube works. Only better - because it's Vimeo. ;)

I agree, we need vimeo on the iPhone
Ben Ellis
agreed, iphone support would be great. not only for the videos directly on the vimeo site but also when they're syndicated. for example using iphone/ipod touch and the facebook app, any youtube videos in a facebook feed are automatically linked to the youtube app. instead the vimeo posts show up as just generic "uploaded a video to vimeo". no thumbnail, no link to the video, not even the title, nada. it would be great if vimeo could integrate with iphone and facebook as well as youtube has. (on the other hand vimeo's uploader leaves youtube's upload options far behind, that's why I'm here!)

The iPhone demands a version of h.264 files that are somewhat unique. While we realize this is something that would be convenient, it's currently not a priority.

+1 I know it's in the works, just wanted to add another perspective.
I am a web designer and have a lot of non-profit clients looking for video hosting options. Mobile site visitors are important to non-profits - with one of the biggest mobile crowds being iPhone users I currently Have to recommend YouTube because they embed their video into their websites.

As a follow up, can you provide details regarding how existing videos will work once iPhone support is in place? Will we have to reupload all of our videos?
Understandable if so, just curious.

Daniel - can you give us an update regarding the Vimeo iPhone app?
Manorin Sieng
The iPhone App development process is very time consuming and annoying
Any app has to be approved by Apple.
In the end it may not be up to Vimeo, if Apple thinks that that app already has features that are already available on the iPhone, (Google Voice ref.) they may deny it or if they think it may consume a unpredictable amount of data, they may restrict it to a wi-fi version (Slingplayer).
The Hulu app has been on many people's wish list for years and is still being "developed"
Pierre Gorissen Plus
Just want to add my +1 to this feature request. Just keeping the topic warm. :-)
California Baptist University Plus
Can Vimeo video be viewed on the other major smartphones inc. Blackberry Storm and those that use Android? From what I can ascertain, video consumption is migrating away from PC to phone so if Vimeo cannot support video on these devices, I am going to have to move to another host that can ... YouTube I suppose.
Daniel Hayek Staff
Vimeo works on the Android but not the Blackberry.
California Baptist University Plus
Great - that is progress - thanks!
What is the status of the iPhone app?
Alex Kosiorek
I have been monitoring this topic for a while...time to chime in.
First off, even though Vimeo now has a mobile version of their site ready, giving Android and iPhone users the ability to see their "staff pics" and with the app coming soon...things in 2010 are going to change. With Flash 10.1 coming out, many new phones (including Android) will get flash support. I would guess this is on Vimeo's radar screen and when flash support is out there for Android and other platforms, hopefully Apple will finally stop restricting it from their phone.
Personally, I have been doing some extensive testing of mobile devices. This testing has been on phone call quality (which the iPhone has some of the poorest scores) as well as for other multimedia rich features including video playback. Vimeo is one of the key test sites. This is primarily because I (along with my employees - kudos to them) produce many videos and post them on Vimeo (for quality) and YouTube (for popularity)
Thus far, I have gotten Vimeo and other Flash based websites to work well on Windows Mobile devices (6.0 and 6.5 especially). I recently tested the HTC Tilt2 on AT&T using extra plugins/browser software and it played Vimeo without a hickup. I have confirmed that the new Maemo phones such as the Nokia N900 do not have any issues either. I haven't seen it work well on Android besides the transcoded videos Vimeo has created. However, this should change in 2010. Apple WILL have to make some changes in late 2010 to provide the same functionality of features. Hopefully, they can improve their phone call quality as well, but that is another subject.

I am on my I phone 3gs and can watch vimeo videos what people have put on .

The only reason I have signed up to Vimeo is because ... well.. everyone seems to be doing it and I don't wanna miss out.
I've been uploading vids to YT now for a while, directly from the iPhone. It's a feature built in (no apps required.) I was really hoping it would be just as easy with Vimeo.

I'm curious to know if anyone is using some browser sniffing javascript, or some other method, to redirect their mobile users to the mobile version of video on Vimeo. I'm looking into this now for my family site and would appreciate any suggestions on how best to approach this solution.
Thanks,

I LOVE Vimeo for all the reasons that its NOT YouTube
but guys..I'm having real problems out here in real-world-land convincing clients to opt for Vimeo, when in the many many many months of this threads there are many pleading users for iPhone support, and things are still squarely in the "We're looking into it" stage...Please tell us things are changing..
I think we all rate Vimeo highly, don't give us reasons to eventually give up and downgrade your Triple A rating.
Its now time for ALL videos on iPhone not just ones that - curiously - are "featured videos" (?)
Vimeo's not a boutique for feature videos, its a community of creatives and believers in something more than cats playing the piano, dont abandon iPhone users and clients to YouTube.
Brad Dougherty Staff
Plus users can choose to have their videos encoded for mobile, as stated multiple times above.
Kalapa Studio Plus
it's kind of strange that only people that pay a plus membership can have this option. It should be available to everyone, as its just another vimeo viewing platform. Its the same concept as making people pay extra for their videos to work on a mac vs. pc
don't really agree with this strategy of yours, and I'm pretty sure this will change in the future, otherwise you will end up loosing users and viewers =)

Hi Brad
Many thanks for the reply... But its not clear. HTC / Blackberry etc isnt iPhone?
Uploads for iPhone to PLAYBACK *on* iPhone?
If so the great..wonderful news guys... where is my "now convert all my videos for my iPhone audiences" button please? Or do I have to spend weeks re-uploading hundreds of the very same clips as before? eeek - hope not!
Brad Dougherty Staff
Currently we only support iPhone OS and Android. If you go to the settings page on on of your videos and go to the video file tab, you'll see a check box to create mobile versions. It could take awhile before they show up.
Stacy Conaway Plus
You can play Vimeo videos on iPad and iPhone only if you view the videos on the Vimeo mobile site. If your video is embedded on another, external site, you need a workaround. I have instructions for that below.
There's a javascript method that works for the iDevices, while also continuing to serve video to Macs and PCs as normal. It's a hack and should not be considered a permanent fix, but it should work fine until Vimeo implements a true HTML5 solution.
Below is a link to a PDF where I have documented the process a bit, along with some caveats on its use. I've been using it successfully and getting my videos working on the iPad and iPhone. I don't know whether it works on other handheld devices because I haven't tested it. You will have to do your own testing to make sure this approach meets your needs. Others have reported to me that they used this and it is working well for them.

'mobile-friendly videos' seems to be misleading.
Is it possible yet to have vimeo videos on a plus account play directing on the iphone/ipad instead of a link to go to vimeo site for playback? Were working with a wordpress plugin but it doesn't play videos directly on the site.
any suggestions would be appreciated!

Youtube's embed codes work because Apple has a special detector for them. We will have an iPad compatible embed code soon.

My iPhone has issues with your vimeo.com/m site. Rather than opening the video player when I click on the play button, it renders the video as a text file in mobile safari.
I've tried everything I could think of and can't get it to work properly. Is there some kind of mime type you need to set on your server to make the video work properly for me? Or can you think of a workaround that would work for me? It's the strangest thing!
Brad Dougherty Staff
We've heard of this issue before, and we haven't been able to replicate it or figure out a solution. The mime types are definitely set correctly.
You could try deleting all the cookies and clearing the cache from Safari (make sure you do it a couple times and try resetting the phone itself a couple times).
Phillip Platz Plus
Maaaggiccc!
Don't know why I never saw this before:
Turns out there's a toggle switch under Settings > Safari labeled "plug-ins" which must be set in the on position. Turns out QuickTime is such a plug-in that needs this setting to operate in Safari.
What remains to be known is A) How I've never seen the preference before and B) Why it was set to the off position.
Nevertheless, now you have an easy answer if you ever hear about this issue again.
Thanks!
Brad Dougherty Staff

With iOS4.1 now supporting HD video upload (to Youtube), it would be great if Vimeo would also support the feature.
I love the quality of video I can now record on the iPhone but it seems a shame that it has to stay on the device or go to Youtube when I could be using Vimeo instead.
Is there anything in the pipeline we can look forward to?

Help! I am new to Vimeo, and I am a huge fan of it since I have been shooting alot of footage with my iphone 4G. I would love to post it on Facebook, but before I do that, I would like to know if other users with an iphone are able to view it from their phone? I have been reading on articles that iphone users are able to, but I see from other forums that it is not possible. I also tested it but unfortunately it is not working. Is this something that Vimeo is looking into?
Thanks!

Vimeo just keeps getting better!! The mobile version is beautiful on iPhone 4, but would it be possible to include a search feature? I want to be able to show friends some of the great films here (Ben Briand's short film 'Apricot' I am looking at you!!)

Even if Vimeo implements these mobile compatibilities, viewers cannot watch a Vimeo video on a mobile device UNLESS the person who posted the video has a pro account, correct? From something I read on another post, I thought that this improvement would benefit all viewers, but anyone who tries to watch non-plus content (the majority of the Vimeo videos out there) will still get the "oops! There was a problem loading this video" message if they're on a Droid or iPhone or Blackberry?

Really, can we get a straight answer on why we can't upload directly from our iPhones? As a Plus member, there should be an app to allow me to upload, PixelPipe used to do it.
Kris Van de Vijver
I would love it if everyone could see my videos on their iPhone or other smartphones.
But to accomplish this, I first have to become a PLUS member, is this correct? If so, I feel I'm getting blackmailed : first pay us, then we make it happen for your videos for the mobile platform.
Please tell me I'm wrong and I don't have to become a PLUS member.
