Hi!
first of all, as usual, thank you for this great service! It's awesome.
I've been through some discussions concerning the topic "arrange video". I understand the importance to keep a timestamp of the upload, but I don't see why that should be necessarily the criteria used to display the My Video page when people come to visit.
My website is designed in order to show posts (works) in chronological order. I decided thanks to your great service to host my videos on Vimeo. When the video ends people might click on the link and go to my Vimeo profile. There, they will see a different order of the videos, and they will start exploring with a criteria which is not the one I wish.
Since Vimeo is also a tool for communication I don't see why it shoudn't be customizable allowing the user to organize (in this case arrange videos) the way they want.
To put it else way.. why should the upload order be public and the first option? Why the upload date and not the original date of the movie? Why people who take a look to my videos would see if a 5 years old video has been uploaded yesterday, just after a video done two months ago?
Maybe the page My Video should be private, allowing other visitors just to visit My Albums where users can display and arrange video as they wish in order to “communicate" properly.
Or I could rename the videos and show them in alphabetical order.. yet it's not possible to set a different criteria from "newest" for people first visit on My Video page. And again.. newest doesn't show newest movies but newest uploads ;)
Thank you!
Have a good day.
Giorgio

in general, vimeo's philosophy defers the viewing preference to the viewers and not the content creators in "general" areas of the site. this is why things such as sorting option, HD vs. SD, the video browser, etc. are all centered around the viewer's preference. on the other hand, we believe that we offer enough compelling features such as albums, channels and groups where content creators can curate, order and manage their presentation in a more customizable environment.
Southpoint Church Plus
I find this philosophy odd coming from a site that is so heavily geared toward the independent filmmaker. (Maybe that isn't the right phrase to use but I hope you get my meaning: the Vimeo "name" is prominent in that circle but less so elsewhere.)
Content producers are accustomed to artificially arranging the user experience in order to tell a specific story. That pretty much sums up what we all do (even you docu guys choose where to point the camera).
I agree that today's web denizen demands the ability to customize their experience based on their preference, but the choice of initial settings and layout should be the province of the content producer.
You guys do a great job and thank you for the service you provide, but we use (and sometimes pay for) that service to share OUR story. Thanks again.
sol friedman Plus
I Agree.
And I'm not sure why this would be considered a philosophically sensitive area.
In the same way that the viewer could find find a plus-users curated selection by randomly scrolling through all the videos, so too can they find the videos in the sequence that they were uploaded by scrolling through all the videos, clicking at random.
Speaking as a viewer, I would rather see the videos in the order that they were intended to be seen.
Unity-Productions Plus
I don't see a reason why the videos cannot be shown as intended when originally created. Surely the viewer can then decide if he/she would like to view them in a different way.
But i still cannot see why the viewer would want to watch videos in a specific order that is different to the filmmakers intended order......
Spring Cooper
my main complaint is that i can't order the videos within my GROUP. why can i order them within an album, but not a group? especially when i uploaded all of the videos on one day, but they are put in an undesirable order! please change this, vimeo!!!
Giorgio Partesana
Hi soxiam, I see.. yet the problem persists. If a random viewer comes to My Video, following the link after the vimeo streaming on my website, he'll firstly found video which are less important for me to show him then others that I uploaded previously.. matter of findability..
I hope Vimeo will think about this option.
Btw, thank you once more for this great service.
micael klok Plus
I'm a motion designer and I like to post my works in progress as I go along. However, I find that if I do, my finished and complete projects will retreat way back to the back pages of my main video page where people will never find them. Instead they'll just see a bunch of rough and unfinished work, as that is what's newest, and perhaps judge me on that.
So, this has me deleting my work in progress after a bit so that things don't get too cluttered on my main page.
You mention that we can create albums. I think a good solution for me would be for me to set a "main album" that I could know that viewers would see first if they clicked on my name to view my videos. Then from there they could go to "all videos" if they wanted to see the cluttered mess arranged in whatever order they saw fit..
Just a thought..
Thomas Oelberger
I definitely agree that being able to arrange albums is a necessary upgrade to vimeo. For example, I embed my videos on my homepage which acts as my digital portfolio. Unfortunately for me, the default action after each video completes is to load links to my three most recently uploaded videos. Because I did not realize how fixed the video order was when I uploaded, one of my oldest and worst videos is directly after my demo reel. So after each video everyone is shown links to a video I would prefer to hide away, and definitely not have as one of the three viewable links. I understand you are able to present your work through vimeo album and channel sections in the order you woudl like, but I think you should be able to rank/arrange the others so that when links are suggested they do not default to only the most recent.
Other than that I am loving vimeo, thanks for your services!

Thomas, just a quick point that with Plus you can decide exactly which videos show up at the end of your video.
Brown Media Production Group PRO
Blake, please explain just how one decides exactly which videos show up at the end of a video. I am a Plus member and fully expect this feature, but can't find the means by which I can "decide exactly which videos show up at the end of [my] video."
I do see the very limited options on my account's Your Videos page. Those options are newest, oldest, most played, most commented, most liked, alphabetical, and private. These six options are still very restrictive and do not meet your claim of letting me decide exactly which videos display. I can't find anything else that addresses this.
Response and advice appreciated.

I would like to know how to do this as well. I have personal videos on there and videos for other work projects that I don't want to come up as soon as someone watches one of my embedded videos on my website. How do I set it so that NO other videos come up at end and it just shows a black screen?

Anyone ever used the featured videos list for your profile page at vimeo.com/settings/profile?
Soeren Mueller Plus
Me too.. pretty pretty please! It's really strange that there's absolutely no option to sort the videos.. I would understand if it's a feature only available for the commercial accounts or something. But not being able to change the order at all is a bit of a let down. :(
Of course the "featured videos" is a nice thing.. but that's only 3 videos and only on the main profile page... as soon as somebody looks at the list of your videos (or lands on that page directly from a google search or something) he will see them in the original upload order, which often doesn't make any sense. But all these arguments were already written by previous posters ;)
Soeren Mueller Plus
A "perfect" implementation of this request to me would be something like.. well to be able to add a custom "creation date" that you can enter manually to every video (if you want to) .. and to have that as an additional sort criteria on the video listing page. And then having an option in your own profile settings to set the default sort cirteria if somebody visits your video page without having explicitely selected one.
So you could set that default sort method to "creation date" and make sure you have all the creation date fields in your videos set correctly.. et voila... ;)
LifePoint Church Plus
I'd agree that adding a "creation date" would be tremendously helpful.
The date of creation is much more important that the date the video is uploaded.
Werner V
maybe if they would put that option people would upload more videos and maybe that is for now not the plan.
I would like the option too but whatever. The service is good and like that there is not risk to find a 10000000 boring videos like on youtube. Just the best one or the less boring one! :-)

I am using flavors.me as a front end to allow users to view my videos.
The problem here is that it will only show the videos in the order I upload them which is not necessarily anythign to do with what people want to see.
I would like to have the most popular videos showing up n the main page and then users can follow the link to vimeo or other resources if they are interested.
From a user perspective it is not particularly interesting to know in what order i happened to upload videos - they just want to see the best ones

I have the exact same problem.

As a plus member it would be really cool to have a re arrange button. Youtube offers it !

Soxiam, this argument smacks of Adobe's 'reasoning' behind not being able to save alpha channels as most people would like them to be used. "It's not the way *we* see it should be done" They say, whilst people are crying out for a change. You are not listening to the user base. This missing feature is pretty much the only reason I can't use Vimeo. I have a ton of things I'd like to upload. I'd be happy (content anyway) to pay for a Plus account for the flexibility of re-ordering on the front page. I have too many files to sit there and ensure that I upload in the exact correct date order of creation. This needs to be flexible, if it was, more people would use it. As it is, it's not a tool for practical use. Other sites can do it, you can reorder your blogs etc. If it's something that's just impossible in the way that the coding for the site has been created then just spit it out and say so, otherwise how about believing in what the users want instead of what you think they should want. This dicussion has been going on for 3 years and everybody still wants the same things, it's time to adjust Vimeos 'Philosophy" and agree with the people who provide content for it. I would love to use it but can't due to inflexibility. Lot's of people have said they would take on a Premium account for this feature, you obviously don't need the revenue enough to give your clients what they would like, well done.
Soxiam, it's lovely that you "believe that we offer enough compelling features such as albums,..etc etc". You're obviously wrong otherwise peole wouldn't still be pleading for this featuire 3 years on.
Excuse the rant, seems like it's an appropriate subject to bang a head against a brick wall for all the feedback from Vimeo it gets.
I want to get my video history online, sounds like Youtube is the place for it.

Daniel, I'm a plus user. I actually am okay with only be able to arrange order of videos in my channel or on an album. Recently, however, I went above 30 or so videos on the channel and received a message that above 30 videos I could no longer arrange things, and it reverted back to the latest uploaded-first thingy. I produce sequential content that needs to be in order. However it is in different categories that I need to arrange the order of each of the videos. In other words ... different categories in which I may have up to 40 videos in each category ... all of which must be in a certain order. So my question is ... why the limit to the number of videos that can be arranged on channels? And is this limit applicable also to Albums? I am struggling to find a way to "design" my presentation of the material overall, but I don't want to put in significant work only to be told later there is a limit that I did not know about earlier. Hope this makes sense. Can you help me? Are there limits on the number of videos that can be arranged in Albums like there are for Channels? Is this documented anywhere? Thanks ... otherwise wonderful service!

Totally agree! Uploading a back-log of work is a nightmare!
Jürg Lehni Plus
My issue is exactly this, adding back-logs of older work...
I don't want to use albums nor do I want to bother customizing a profile page. All I would like to be able to do is to reorder the default sequence of my videos, so it actually represents the sequence in which I have created these works, regardless of when they were uploaded.
Please, this shouldn't be too hard, right?
Jürg Lehni Plus
Also worth pointing out: I can arrange videos in an Album, but just as I cannot arrange the videos on the 'My Videos' page, I cannot arrange the albums on the 'My Albums' page. I am really surprised to see that such basic functionality is missing from Vimeo, and hope it will be added soon. It seems people have been asking for this feature for at least 3 years now.

I understand that the viewer is king, and if the site isn't organized for the viewers they will leave. The viewers should have control to see things as they wish, I really believe this approach is best and I think the way Vimeo handles the user experience is great across the site. I love it!
I think Vimeo is so great, that I am trying to set it up to host my portfolio of works, commercial and otherwise. I WAS using it to post occasional fun/silly projects and such, but now Im really trying to invest here. I was a webdeveloper and can easily host my videos myself, in a number of formats in flash, quicktime, ipod friendly, etc., but I was drawn to Vimeo for the complete package- great interfaces, quality, ease of use, and the community.
Now that I have started uploading old projects, some I would rather users look at later, they are on top. I will bury them with more and new things soon, but its still a random jumble- a reflection of my use of the service and changes in the way I host, etc. I will create albums soon, maybe a channel, though I don't know what that is exactly.
What I experience when I see a video I like that is hosted by Vimeo, is excitement to see more by that user, so I click and go to their page. And I click on "videos" because I want to see their channel or whatever. I want to see all their videos, the good and bad and all that, I don't want to see something over curated. I just want to see all their videos, and I prefer to see them just as they were made. Which is by date. Not by upload time. You could make the default sorting order for a user's videos "user date" something. You could change "newest" to "newest upload" get rid of alphabetical. is that too messy?
Right now Vimeo is set up for the casual and spontaneous and the new. Which is great. But if it could accommodate the old as well, the service would become more useful for filmmakers who want to use it to represent their work.
If filmmakers have almost no control over the order their videos show up on the main page that viewers see, it really drains the usefulness of the site for them, and in tern, the viewer. Would it cost too much in simplicity?
Soxiam Staff
thanks for your thoughts and kind words, joel. this has been one of the focal points of our ongoing internal debate as well. some people think we simply dismiss their suggestion but that's not really the case.
it's always interesting what people want for their content vs. how they like to browse other people's content on vimeo. the same level of flexibility they enjoy when they are browsing other people's content quickly takes a backseat when they argue the need to organize their own content.
we've introduced featured videos, albums and channels to allow people to curate and showcase their content in a specific order.
these are the galleries. as for the "library" of their content we feel that it's still better to side with the people browsing the content.
there are some new ideas we are testing and we hope it will bring more flexibility to the content owners. as we work on these ideas we will keep your suggestion in mind.
VictoriousVideo.Net Plus
I really don't get it. How does this empower the viewer? Im not trying to be snarky, I just dont follow.
joel department Plus
As a viewer, I want to curate my own choices of a persons work, I don't want to be controlled... sort of. A dvd without the option to jump around, or an art show that requires the viewer to see the pieces in a certain order and length of time would be a direct way for a viewer to see the work the way the artist wanted it seen. It could even be fun. But mostly, it would feel so controlling.
As a viewer, I want to walk around and see things however I want to see them. As an artist, I want to control my viewer's experiences, just show then the ones I think they will like, I don't want them to pick the "wrong" ones, etc. But no one else likes that, so I just try to relax and let them have their experience of my work, not the one I wanted them to have.
Anyway, that said, I see you have 81 videos- a big pile! It sure helps to have them grouped by subject. You have 2 albums, but they are hard to find, as they can only be accessed from your channel's home page I think. If the filmmaker cant control the order and such of their films, I wish that the albums would be a little more prominent. I have little videos I made quickly for a single kid mixed in with my other productions. I hope people don't get the wrong idea if they just happen to watch those.
joel department Plus
Oh yeah, I forgot about channels, I guess that works too! Being able to specify a date that gets used in the sorting order would still be great. Its a pretty minimal control, and mostly just allows filmmakers to present their work in a more accurate manner. Not likely to get abused.
Unity-Productions Plus
100% agree with this. As a viewer we want the choice of what to watch. And as a content provider we want control over what people will see.
the thing i think is missed in most of this discussion is that often these two things are same. No viewer wants to watch a tv series and jump around in a different order than it was created so why would they want to do that online.
Occasionally they may be looking for something specific and as such should be able to specify how to view what they want alphabetically, chronologically or however they choose.
Essentially i don't buy the argument of 'we have decided to side with the viewer' because i believe the creator and the viewer generally want the same thing to view content in the order it was meant to be viewed. With the possibility of further options from that point!!!

add Date of Creation
add ability to rearrange videos
Again, I agree that the viewer is king, but the initial impression is controlled by the person adding the content. (e.g. In a store the customer is king, but store owners don't just put the products in the store in the order they are delivered. They arrange it nicely and make it flow well.)
I am purposely not uploading old work and films because I don't want it at the top of the list. I'd rather people dig down the list to get to my older work.
Just simply a "date of creation" field added and a switch somewhere that says "sort movies by - date uploaded or date of creation" would be amazing.

I also think creators should be able to arrange content in the order they wish. Initial presentation should be whatever order the content creator desires. However users wish to sort content after the initial presentation is up to them.

We appreciate the enthusiasm but this kind of comment isn't really going to help, Blake. A simple "Yes, I would like this too" is probably the best way to get your opinion across. What is seen as simple in your eyes isn't always the case when it comes to implementation. That being said, and has been said above, this feature is something we are still thinking about and we appreciate the feedback.
Blake Whitman Staff
While we continue to discuss this feature I want to remind people that they can always create and customize a channel to display specific content in a specific order, that is a very easy and good alternative in the meantime.
Matt Brass Plus
Channels are great organizationally. However, I have been disappointed in them in that they are very easy to unintentionally navigate away from and end up on the posters profile page. Which brings us again to the need to be able to organize content.
Blake Whitman Staff
If you create a channel of only your videos, only your videos will appear in the order and style you want. So if you link people to that channel, that's what they will see.
Matt Brass Plus
I really like the way the channels work overall (layout and organizational features are great). The problem I have is that a lot of users instinctively select a movie by clicking on the title. When they do this they are taken to the user page to see it as opposed to seeing it on the channel. Obviously if they click on the thumbnail they stay but for some reason that is counterintuitive for me and I gravitate to the title.

Low and behold, got a Plus account erroneously thinking this option was a given. The argument against curatorial empowerment doesn't add up. Both as content provider and as audience, I would like to be presented with factual order, and not ambiguity. As it stands, a video that was created several years ago should not go in front of newer work if the author doesn't wish it so.
I understand there are other ways to organize, but I don't believe those are sufficient options compared to how most users peruse the site (might be a bit presumptuous here).
Anyways, those are my thoughts. I do enjoy what you guys got here, a cut above the rest, but please consider implementing this for your customers and visitors, thanks.
Ben Hillman Plus
The same reasoning that goes into arranging songs on an album goes into arranging the order of videos. The creator wants to take the viewer through an experience. Being able to control the order is vital. The user can always scroll around and skip movies if they want to, but the creator should be able to lay out the order in which they first appear. Please add this feature.

I am moving into the NYC freelance videographer market, and as a result I am referring potential clients to my vimeo site as my general reel. It is really important to me to be able to arrange my profile so that the videos I most want people to see are on top, as the ones on top will inevitably be viewed more. When I send my vimeo page link to someone, I don't necessarily want them to see the most recent video I've uploaded first, but rather the ones I think are going to make me look the best. As a paying vimeo member, I really think I should have the right to customize the order of my videos. The ability to customize one's media is a well-established option on Facebook, Youtube, and other web giants, and I really think it puts Vimeo at a disadvantage to not offer this feature to the user.

I don't see what is so hard about providing the option. It's a variable. Right now you're using upload date/time. Add "custom order" as a new variable and a "Sort By" popup. Put in a little drag and drop code or some up/down buttons to bump videos into a different order and Bob's your uncle.
I want this for my own personal sanity. By the time this is done, there will be a massive tangle of versions that are all jumbled up because post production is not a linear process. I honestly don't understand the obsession with upload date.

Dear Mr Vimeo,
How does allowing the author to control order disempower the viewer? This is something that Vimeo has not explained to my satisfaction. The fact is, I can order my videos but this does not prevent the viewer from picking and choosing. In fact, that is how I browse Vimeo - I pick which videos to watch mainly based on their thumbnails, so will scroll through a list looking for interesting things.
That said, when I look at a designer's work, I pay attention to the order, and look for a progression from older to newer, also looking for a development of work - I expect better quality work to be the top-most in the list, and usually the best work is the work done this year, not two years ago.
I have been uploading my body of work, but only just realised I cannot change the order of movies. I have been uploading based on which clips I had easiest access to - I did not realise Vimeo required me to plan my uploads to make chronological sense!
Please, for the sake of those of us using Vimeo as a portfolio of work, allow us to change the order of clips in our profiles, without having to resort to albums (which I do not believe regular viewers - like myself, a viewer for more than 3 years) use at all.
Thanks for your consideration.

It's a joke how many people want this simple feature and you simply brush the issue off claiming we can do it with an album. I would like to put my 2 cents forward as a light user of vimeo.
I only share videos on vimeo with my family. The regular videos like bar-b-q, a trip, family picnic and so on. I would upload a bunch of videos which are not in any order. It could be first video of my recent trip and then the last video just to give my family a trailer while i convert and upload the rest of the videos. Once all is done i would like to rearrange my videos in order that i want my family to see it and this is where i would like to have this feature. Being a web developer myself, i would say a simple drag and drop script might sort out my problem and as it seems from this thread, many others.
Seems like this is being debated for 2 years now internally and on the forum i would suggest testing this feature with a few members and see the results.

There are two ways to see this. Either you want your complete filmography to be on vimeo, in which case the argument stands that ordering them by date is of prime importance because you don't want recently digitized old stuff buried under your new films.
And the other thing is that you should only upload what is brand new and finished and polished and refined - and that's vimeo's point, I think. Allowing people to upload their old stuff and place them at the back of their page is just hosting people's films that they are sentimentally attached to but not sure they're gonna be a hit.
So really ask yourself what you want people to see coming from you, old stuff or new stuff? I understand both points of views because as a filmmaker i wish people would arrive on my page and see films ordered like when people go on IMDb. But the way it works now kind of forces you to be really selective with your work and upload your recent stuff - because life should be aimed towards the future, right? And this website is good because it features beautifully crafted, finished films, right? Not "in progress" videos or films from when we were 12 years old trying to make films in our backyards.
Besides, if you make a showreel an album or a channel are great tools.
So, as much as I am annoyed that if I upload just any old short film that i've made 20 years ago but recently digitized it will show up on top of my films, I also respect and like the fact that it makes me chose more carefully what I want to upload, thus forcing me to think in terms of quality before uploading.
the Sidewinder 3000
i think you're reading too much into their motivation (and if they claim that as their motivation, then that's a little creepy). it's a bit nuts to think they have this odd, convoluted policy to prevent people from posting unfinished work that would actually do very little to prevent people from posting unfinished work. and what if someone's "new" work was the unfinished work? or their "old" work was more polished and refined? and who's is the judge of whether something is "finished and polished and refined"? george lucas has been continuously refining one of the great movie trilogies of all time. should he not be able to post to vimeo? sorry, but this theory doesn't really hold water.
content creators should be able to control what order their work is seen in. period. it's their portfolio, they should decide. just like they decide what order the shots and scenes in their films go. and practically, filmmakers don't always have access to the best versions of their films at any given moment. or the might be waiting for rights to clear. there are a million reasons why people don't upload their work in the chronological order it was made. nor is that necessarily the order they'd want it in any way. and as far as the argument that the current system maximizes the experience or users/viewers, i would simply ask "how"? are viewers silently clamoring to watch internet video content in the precise order in which it was uploaded? or do they really not know or care about such esoteria, and just wanna see something that will engage them?
vimeo claims that albums will allows creators the control they want, but that ONLY helps when someone has a direct link. if someone does a search for your name, or clicks on a link from another video, then they will see the creator's work in the default way, which is: last uploaded, first seen. please, vimeo, add the ability for content creators to arrange their videos however they want, on their profile page, and any other page.

Am a Plus user and happened to upload 40 videos in a short span of time and was aghast that my best/latest work got buried away.
I totally, absolutely, vehemently, imperatively, desperately wish to see this custom-sorting feature implemented right away PLEASE. For the following reasons:
1) I do not think it is manipulative on my part to put my best foot forward and present visitors what I think are my best videos right away. I really care that they experience the best of what I have to offer without having to grope their way around my page. THIS, is good user experience in this context. NOT the cliched/standardized drop-down sort options.
2) When I can control much else of how visitors can see my stuff - including name of video, my name, Like button, Share button, color etc etc - pretty much everything else, what is the big ethical/moral issue with letting me decide the order of my videos???
3) It is not even a technology bottleneck. It is doable and done. YouTube offers this already. Ouch, that probably rankles.
Hope you will take serious note and implement this immediately. It really really really really really really really matters.
My best compliments to your otherwise fantastic work.

I too have a bunch of past videos that I'd like to upload (mostly grad school/ITP documentation), but I want my full video stream to be in order of when I actually recorded the video. Chronology is really important to me. Drag 'n drop organization would be great but maybe a simpler way to do this would be to allow Plus members to change the date in the settings area, in the same way that WordPress allows one to change the date of a post. If authenticity is an issue, perhaps the "creation date" which sets the order of the videos could be distinct from the "upload date" which could be displayed inconspicuously on the player page. (I didn't get a chance to read the whole thread, so maybe someone already proposed this, in which case I'm giving a "+1".) Thanks.

In the absence of a proper response from Vimeo, let's theorize why that is. Vimeo, prove us wrong!
1. Vimeo was developed in an erroneous way so that this feature, however simple it might seem, is impossible to implement.
2. Vimeo staff is afraid that the increased volume of content this feature might lead to would outgrow their server capacity.
3. Vimeo staff has a specific ideological problem with implementing this feature. It somehow conflicts with their ethos. An internal conflict might even be the reason for the silence. No one dares to comment.
4. Vimeo earns a lot of money. That being their sole interest, there is no incentive to listen to their userbase.
5. Vimeo's development is limited by some contract with one or more investors.
6. Vimeo's staff is just plain arrogant.
I'm not going to say "please" like so many have done here. I paid for Plus; if this feature can not or will not be implemented, spell it out. I can't recommend this service to friends or colleagues if you can't even give your customers a proper answer.
Jesse Tarnoff Plus
I agree that people need to look at the motivations behind why Vimeo chooses not to give their users such a requested feature (for 3+ years). And I don't buy their "reasons" of feeling like this would be a step backward for the viewer. There's something deeper here, and unfortunately, it has to do with Vimeo being a company motivated by profit.
My guess is that Vimeo will not implement this because it is not in their company's best interest. This is a subtle way or restricting what kinds of videos get posted to Vimeo, and thereby reducing the massive amount of storage they would need to have. If I had this feature, to keep my best work up front and upload my old work in the back (hardly visible but still online) I would do it in a heartbeat. We all would! And that ='s a HUGE cost to Vimeo without any gain.
They DO NOT want to become an online storage tool for your years of video.
Jesse Tarnoff Plus
And the implication is, "if you don't like it, go to Youtube." They don't care if you post a repository of old portfolio work there. They don't care about videos that you wouldn't want to promote yourself. Vimeo is a company motivated by profit, and they want to make sure that they keep their costs down (storage, bandwidth, traffic) while maximizing their profit (by creating a community of committed high quality content producers).
I do love Vimeo, and have 3 Plus accounts on here for different companies and referred other businesses to them. I greatly appreciate the wonderful player they've built and the clean and helpful website. I would hope they would listen to us users but unfortunately, what can we do? Even a few more years of requests won't fix anything if their Product Strategist thinks it will hurt them. We just have to hope competition makes delighting users relevant again.

Not to be pithy, but when I worked in software "philosophy" was usually engineer code for legacy.
I think it would really benefit all of us to finally see vimeo allow for user defined display of content on our pages.
And conversely Funny or Die has a pretty neat way of displaying videos not just by the order the user wishes but by the magnitude the user wishes to display them. Such as featuring certain videos on the users own profile pages and arranging videos how the user sees fit. Maybe the vimeo folks should take a test drive over there for some inspiration.
Hell, make it a pro feature as an incentive for me to rejoin the vimeo pro ranks. Cheers

Hi Mr. Vimeo,
everything has already been said by 163 people before me, and since last STAFF reply is 9 months old, maybe some news will be born soon?
Everybody agrees that the problem with album is that they are cool yes, but they are a hidden feature, one must go and look for them, as if any user has to think: "should i watch his videos OR his albums??"
I think here lies the problem.
I had a bit of time and i've made this rough sketch to illustrate how to possibly improve this service
It's about MERGING the video section and the album section:
lostconversation.com/vimeo.jpg
This idea is even more complicated than just let video being organized manually - but hey.
I'm not going to say that ANY other online community (behance, coroflot etc and even youtube) offers this chance to custom organize videos
I'm not going to say that I turned to Plus in the hope to find this option available and I'm not going to say that I was very disappointed when I found out it was still not possible.
So instead of complaining I came up with this idea, hence please Mr. Vimeo say something and don't hide behind the "you can do it in albums" statement.
We use Vimeo as work platform, and many of us pay for it, you should listen to 164 politely angry voices.

+17, explained in the following rant:
I've just purchased a vimeo plus account in order to display my work on my professional site. I love the quality and ease of use of Vimeo, and am really dismayed that this issue, which has stopped me from becoming a member in the past, has still not been solved. Anyone who clicks on to vimeo from the embedded videos (and I know I do that quite a lot), gets to my profile page. And most people I know including myself, then click on the list of videos. Not on Albums or Channels or anything else. I've read through both threads I could find on this subject and it feels like you Vimeo guys are frankly evading the issue and not being open about the actual reason for it. And so I urge you:
Would you please explain, in a simple and concise manner, why you believe that encountering a bunch of arbitrarily sequenced videos (since that's what displaying them by upload date amounts to) is more conducive to a user's experience then seeing them arranged by a date tag or anything else by default?
It seems like such a simple matter- if you really believe chronological display should be a default, fine- please let me enter the date the video was actually produced in my settings. Right now I'm stuck with a bunch of old videos that I "made the mistake" of uploading after everything else. They keep jumping to the front of the line where I really don't want them to be- and I have no way of fixing this short of re-uploading everything or just removing the old videos altogether. This just doesn't make any sense, and has nothing to do with viewer vs. producer flexibility: this arbitrary parameter for organization of the videos is not any more flexible or natural to the viewer than encountering them in any other order- if you think otherwise please share this with us here.

+1 An important deficit.
Now that I have a Plus account, I'm adding older videos, and I need to sort them by date made, not date uploaded.
I need this on the default home page & sidebar.
Album doesn't sort by date uploaded, nor can it be made the default page.
A Channel can not be made the default page, and custom sorting is limited to 30 videos.
The sidebar seems random, regardless.
Other people have other custom needs, the big picture is that more freedom to customize is needed.
This discussion has gone on for years.
Occasional staff mentions of Vimeo's philosophy about who controls viewing seem like a way to avoid the bother of a fix. If you must charge more, so be it, but something should be done.

I'm a film maker and have just joined Vimeo to be able to showcase my work to others outside my own website. Without thinking about it, I started uploading all my best work first and the oldest work last. After uploading about 21 films I realized I have no control over how they display. I kept thinking that I cannot find how to do that as the thought that you won't let me do that seemed so improbable.
My hunt as to how to do this has brought me to this forum.
Can I please add my request to the umpteen others that this is really important to us as professionals to be able to showcase our work in the order we want. I've read some comments from the Staff about how they want to empower the viewer rather than the host to decide the order of the videos. But frankly in your in case it's neither the viewer or us who decide the order but 'Vimeo' who has decided that the videos can only appear in the order they want. All you need to do is to at least give us a choice within your 'sort' button options to make any other one of the existing buttons the default setting instead of 'date Added'.
Please let me know if there is any plan to do this or else I need to erase all my films and start uploading them again

It baffles me how the Staff refuses to provide us with a simple feature that obviously is desired by a large majority of the community. Pretty strange this issue was never resolved...considering I have yet to read a post by a member rejecting this much-needed fix. Seems the only ones rejecting it are the STAFF members. Very strange. Sure isn't a good method for maintaining positive customer relations. They won't even consider the "PLUS" members' advice. Vimeo seems very stubborn when it comes to accepting critical, rational feedback.

content creators should be able to control what order their work is seen in. period. it's their portfolio, they should decide. just like they decide what order the shots and scenes in their films go. and practically, filmmakers don't always have access to the best versions of their films at any given moment. or the might be waiting for rights to clear. there are a million reasons why people don't upload their work in the chronological order it was made. nor is that necessarily the order they'd want it in any way. and as far as the argument that the current system maximizes the experience or users/viewers, i would simply ask "how"? are viewers silently clamoring to watch internet video content in the precise order in which it was uploaded? or do they really not know or care about such esoteria, and just wanna see something that will engage them?
official vimeo folks who've posted here claim that the "albums" will allow creators the video arranging control they want, but that ONLY helps when someone has a direct link. if someone does a search for a content creator's name, or clicks on a link from another video, then they will see the creator's work in the default way, which is: last uploaded, first seen.
please, vimeo. pretty please and double-secret please, add the ability for content creators to arrange their videos however they want, on their profile page, and any other page.

Come on, Vimeo. You have the technology to do this! You have proven this with the customized order function in My Albums. It would not hurt to add this function to the My Videos section as well, would it? What really hurts is for me to DELETE all my movies, FIND OUT which order they were created, UPLOAD them again, and HOPE that I do not find an old movie that should have been listed earlier...
I am a long-term MobileMe (which HAS the manual sorting function) user, and if it wasn´t for Apple´s weird decision making, I would not have joined Vimeo and paid for a years´s PLUS membership.

Add me to the list...I was about to go Pro thinking I would get more control over this, now I'm having second thoughts. I simply don't understand Vimeo's aversion to this idea. I've recently started using Vimeo exclusively to host my animation work, but now I need to add a large back catalog of older videos and I really don't want that work to sit on top of newer stuff. I have albums but I rarely use them, don't know many that do, and if somebody clicks on an embedded video to go to my user page it certainly doesn't redirect them to the album of my choice. All we are asking for is a date field where we can set how things are arranged on our MAIN VIDEO PAGE. Come on Vimeo, listen to your users. The debate over user control is moot, they can still sort or arrange as they like, but at the very least the default arrangement should be defined by the creator of that content.

I have tried to custom arrange a video in my channel by dragging the video to the #1 position. I hit save changes and absolutely nothing happens. For one of the staff members in another thread who said that there was never a "feature" option in the old channel look, he is incorrect. I use to "feature" my videos by picking the video I wanted to feature and selecting the "feature" option. Now I have to drag the video I want to the top, but for some reason it isn't working for me, even when I press "save." Perhaps I have to be a PLUS member to be able to use this option?
Carlos Alberto Manrique Clavijo
Add my vote to add the feature.
I'm not suggesting to 'force viewers', I agree. But everyone (including users -most of whom are filmmakers) should have a choice.
What if albums are arranged by default in the order in which the owner sets them and there is a big, beautiful, visible, friendly, easy-to-access button that viewers can click to re-arrange by date?
Please, please, please.

Yes PLEASE. This is surely a no-brainer. It's very frustrating and makes Vimeo useless as a portfolio site as you can't properly control what your visitors will see when they first visit your account. You end up having to build another site or blog to display your videos in the order you want. Albums and channels are not a good enough solution as people still head straight for your main page once they are on the site.

Just recently switched to Vimeo from YouTube because it's so much better in so many ways. Now I'm not sure if I'll stick with it. Example: As videographer for a big family wedding, I'm posting segments of the wedding weekend as I finish them, and sending family members to Vimeo to view them. Members who first tune in when I'm done with whole project will see a nice display of the whole wedding weekend in REVERSE, starting with the reception and ending with the bachelor party! I noticed the option for the viewer to sort the videos alphabetically by title and figured I could at least use that, so I started each title with a number. But assuming I can even get people to check that option, when they go to "couch" viewing mode to watch the wedding, it STILL starts at the end with the reception! This lack of presentation control is so ridiculous that whatever Vimeo's strange motives may be, I feel like they will eventually have to resolve this. Then I will embrace this service wholeheartedly.

The problem with "Album" as a solution for custom arrangement of the videos is that it doesn't function as the front page of the users. In order for visitors to arrive to the album, the users must send a direct link to them. It is not an elegant solution as Daniel Hayet (STAFF) has suggested two years ago on this thread. I would appreciate if we can have the option to use an "album" as the front page. That will fix this issue.
Thanks for listening

It's something we've considered in the past but decided not to. We know the reasons why some of our users would like this feature but we also learned that it's a rather difficult tool to build (at our scale) and make it useful (even for users with thousands of videos)."
Something we considered but decided not to do. Hmmmm. I understand the difficult nature of this task, but to say it wouldn't be useful? Even Facebook allows users to drag and drop photo order in massive albums containing hundreds of images. I believe it is up to the user to decide whether it would be useful or not, and the sheer number of users in this forum begging Vimeo to listen should be a testament to that.

I have a feeling this is mostly a business related issue. By having the last uploaded video first you will avoid uploading videos that does not reach your public quality standards or your personality/videographer profile. Yep this defo needs to be sorted. The answer 'you can arrange albums' just isnt cutting it for a variety of reasons listed above. Just want to add my voice to this chorus as I literally am baffled every single time I log in to upload a video to my reel and can't manage how it appears. Is there some ideological stance the creators of vimeo have on not letting users have this mind-numbingly basic ability??
Do you organize the apps on your phone? Wouldn't you rather they just appear in the order you bought them? No? Why? Oh, right, cause it makes no useful sense.
Luckily we have this decade old string of ignored users here to give us a useless place to (not) voice this complaint.

As a Vimeo user, and paying customer, who has voiced my opinion on this matter in the past, I can say that my patience has reached an end with this issue. I don't know about the rest of you, but my videos get probably 10% of the traffic they used to before Vimeo revamped and relaunched the site to a disgruntled user base. To not allow paying customers to custom arrange their videos is ridiculous. I hate to say it, but YouTube allows me so many more options for customization that they aren't even comparable anymore. YouTube quality keeps increasing and Vimeo is doing what to keep me shelling out my money year in/year out?
Petr Eremin
Wow, this is three years old and still in discussion. :)
But it's funny, I also was searching for that kind of feature. Ended up making an album with my own videos. But still, people randomly come to my profile and watch my uploaded videos and not my album.
I would also love to have the possibility to sort "my videos" in a way that I would like to present them to my audience. Maybe by adding the option "custom" to the others "plays" "alphabetical" etc. and being able as a creator to choose what option should be standard for my channel.
Thank you.

Just joined the Vimeo community. Extremely disappointed by Vimeo lacking this feature. I read the Staff answers and with all due respect, they make no sense to me. We should be able to arrange the content we create and upload in the way we as creators of the content desire, specially after paying $200!. Sorry for my language, but I've got so frustrated after uploading 4 videos for several hours and realize about this.
I have to delete them all and re upload them again in the order I want today, but who knows 1 year later!. To be honest, Who really cares about the upload time!! Really who cares! Am I missing something?
Luckily I don't have many videos to upload so far, but it so strange that after 3 years with SO many valid points and requests, this has not been implemented.

The default for displaying videos still seems to be upload date. For yourself, you can arrange your vids different ways (alphabetically, etc.). But folks visiting the site see your vids only by upload date. After 3 years (see original post above), this hasn't been resolved. Is there a touchy issue involved here? Would this functionality conflict w/ a core (but unstated) Vimeo philosophy: "Newest is Best"?

I paid for Pro to do a bunch of uploads... but I'm editing the videos "out of order" and I want them to be displayed IN order.
View by date: is simply incorrect. My videos *have dates* but they aren't the upload date.
View alphabetica: also incorrect because it doesn't let you switch from a-z to z-a. I'm uploading videos with titles:
2009-11, Thanksgiving
2010-01, New Years
Alphabetical doesn't make it possible to start from most recent.
VIMEO -- PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS!
Matt Schwarz Staff
Hi Joe,
As we've mentioned before in this thread, you have the ability to use Groups, Albums, and Channels to arrange your videos how you like. But when it comes to "general" areas of the site, like browsing or profile pages, we tend to give the viewer the benefit of viewing videos in whichever order they like, and by default that is based on their upload date.
The nature of our site when it comes to videos is cataloguing them by time they were created. Allowing users to set any date they like can cause a lot of confusion for the viewer and our system.
It's been something we've debated internally for a long while, and we are revisiting it as we speak, but for now upload date is upload date.
Luciano Baragiola Plus
Hello Matt,
it's so nice to finally hear a staff member's voice on this thread since a long time.
It's even nicer reading that you guys are revisiting this topic.
I can understand that allowing users to set any date they like, can cause confusion for your system. But still, after all the comments in this thread, I cannot understand why this can cause confusion also to the viewer.
At least give us the chance to decide for ourself : )
I'd like to suggest a possible solution, a new 'Album Settings' feature:
dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21656741/vimeo_new_setting_idea.jpg
Obviously this is only a rough idea. l'm sure you guys can figure out a better and more elegant solution.
Cheers!
L
Matt Schwarz Staff
Hi Luciano,
Thanks for the suggestion! The confusion that comes from offering users the choice is then communicating that to the viewer. Are they looking at the upload date or the custom date you set? Sure we can add copy to clarify that, but I still see this causing problems.
Again, not saying it's off the table, and there is probably an elegant solution, but it's not something that's at the top of our list at the moment.
Luciano Baragiola Plus
I agree with you on that, Matt. The date can cause more confusion.
Ok, so now we can only hope that you guys will make a move on this topic one day.
But please..have a look at this 3 years long topic with users asking for it : )
With this new option Vimeo will be the best of the best.
Ciao!
Joe Belfiore Plus
Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Matt.
One thing I'd like to point out.. you say "upload date is upload date". I *totally* agree with you! However, your UI doesn't say "upload date". Your UI says "date". The date of my daughter's 5th birthday is the date of her birthday, it's not the date 7 months later that I uploaded the video.
Please wither change the UI to say "Upload date" (then it'll be accurate!) or let it REALLY, ACTUALLY be the date. Right now it's simply incorrect and confusing for the viewer of the page-- the user you say are trying to optimize for. I mean this in the most friendly way -- I know the "date" of my videos better than you do, though I agree you know the "upload date". :)
Matt Schwarz Staff
Thanks for your thoughts Joe. Maybe it's just me, but I always assume the date posted on most sites, whether they be video, a blog, etc, always means the date it was submitted or published on that site. So for me, the confusion isn't there although you make a valid point.
Again, what will come of these discussions is not totally clear as of yet, so I don't want to discount anything.

I would love to be able to re-arrange video order as well.
More specifically I am using the API to display groups of videos on our site (Series of related Sermons for a church). The "groups" I'm using are channels. This works awesomely and I love it. However we recently went way back into our older sermons and found a few series that never got their own channels, the videos themselves were uploaded to Vimeo in the correct order however since the channels were created out of order I am unable to display the channels in the "correct" (chronological, uploaded date) order.
My solution is going to have to be a hard coded mess in my display page unless there's something I'm missing.
Thank you Vimeo for doing so much RIGHT (it makes the FEW little bothersome things much easier to handle)! You're awesome and we love you.
