Does anyone have any experience with the Flip video camera?
    amazon.com/gp/product/B000ONFQ2K/ref=pd_cp_p_0/104-1031260-8366303?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_r=0X5YF8NYETJY1E6NSR0F&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=250314001&pf_rd_i=B000ONDRFS
    (hope that works.)

I'm looking for an inexpensive video camera that is fairly portable and can hold a decent length of video. I'm not a hardcore filmmaker or anything, and while I'm functional with computers etc., I wouldn't call myself "savvy." I just want something to do vlog entries and maybe make a few fun little things with friends. Currently I use my Nikon coolpix p1's video function, but it won't hold much at a decent quality. (I have a 256mb card.)

Does anyone have any input that might be helpful?

I played with a flip a few weeks ago - the lens is crap, the video looks like it went through a washing machine, you got zip manual control and battery life leaves a lot to be desired. If you're looking for an ultraportable video camera, take a look at Casio's Exilim, Canon's Powershot or Sanyo's Xacti cameras - they all cost just a bit more than the Flip, and offer a lot more value.

I have a Sanyo Xacti CG65 and it's fantastic! I love it to bits. As a stills camera, it's great, and as a video camera for its size it is really great too. The only gripe I have with its video function is that when doing indoors video, people with black hair tend to have solid black hair with no texture, just black blobs. Outdoors it works great for me, and currently all the videos uploaded to my account were taken with it.

Oh, and the zoom buttons are the ‘on or off’ type, you can't press it hard and zoom quick or press soft and zoom slowly, so I never use the zoom function while recording video on it except in parts I plan to edit out later.

You can also see a whole lot of stills taken with it on my Flickr Account: flickr.com/photos/jennathepony/

I really would recommend it! It's very easy to use, but has enough functionality to take more complex shots when needed too. The pictures on the web make it look a lot bigger than it actually is.

I have an earlier version of the Flip and love it. There's nothing like just grabbing the camera every time you feel like it, hitting record, and capturing whatever you want to. The video quality is decent for stuff like Vimeo, YouTube, etc. But, its not going to win any award. It's just fun and easy, which means I shoot little videos all the time.

Summer, just get a bigger card. It would be cheaper than a new camera, take up less space than carrying two cameras around and when it came to actually making images, you wouldn't have to decide which camera to use.
    Just a thought.

I have a Flip, and I really enjoy it. I'm not an auteur, but it takes much better video than my Treo, so I'm pretty happy with it. Since I mostly travel with film cameras these days, I can't really use those to capture video. :)

They're also substantially cheaper than the Xacti - a good Flip will run you about $130, whereas the Xacti cameras run around $400-500.

Go with an Aiptek A-HD. They shoot 1280x720. I picked one up from BB the other day for $139 (on sale). Also can be found at CC and Target. Cheapest HD camcorder around.

Hey Matt, are the videos you uploaded on vimeo from that camera? I'm very curious :)

I have been using the Power Shot G7 for one year to shoot short clips. It's got a pretty fine resolution (1024) that gives fairly good results. It's light and user friendly. Try it, you will adopt it!
Not to compare with a camcorder, of course!

The Casio Exilim is my pic for early '08 quick-shooting video. Not only does it have special "YouTube" and low-quality modes (as well as high quality) but it has a dedicated 'shoot video' button that is different from the 'take picture' button. This feature makes it incredibly easy to shoot a video and be sure that you're shooting a video. The videos are uploaded in .MOV format, too--how can you beat that for compatibility?!

The best small pocketable HD video camera "hybrids" are the Canon Powershot TX1 & the Sanyo Xacti line. Both produce excellent looking videos AND photos, which is what a hybrid is supposed to do.

If you're on a budget, the Aipteks are OK, but they're cheaply made & the audio quality sucks. Photos aren't that great either. But for $130, its a pretty good value.
  • Jenna Fox 2 years ago
The photos are pretty great on the Xacti, though it is a fixed aperture camera, and has no 'RAW' file support (at least the one I have, an Xacti CG65) so it does have it's limits as far as creative photography goes. For average point and shoot photo's the results are fantastic. I love mine!

They are marketed as being able to take a photo even while recording video. This isn't the whole story though, this only works right when your video and photo's are set to certain not so great resolution settings. With the photo mode set to the full 6 megapixels, taking a photo while recording video causes the video to pause for about half a second while the shutter snaps shut, open, shut again, and then opens again and resumes recording video, though audio keeps recording through that. The resulting file plays back with a single frame stretched over the gap small but noticeable gap.
  • Videos by Kerry 2 years ago
Yeah, they all do the "pause video, snap pic, resume video" thing while recording. Really no way around it unless its some kind of dual lens setup. I believe Kodak has a camera that has a dual lens that does just that, but the name escapes me.

The flip mino is fantastic. I'm not sure why there are some flames on this thread, but I just unloaded my 3 CCD camcorder and bought a mino. I've been wearing it out.

The clarity is amazing, even in low light and the audio is fine. For people who want to gun and run and work in applications like iMovie it is perfect. If you're an aspiring film-maker look elsewhere. Go see this demo: youtube.com/watch?v=l5qvQabrUtk

I just love my Flip Mino. Is easy to carry everywhere and picture and sound quality are very good.

I just have an issue with the codec and Ulead Video Studio 11 Plus.. I can see and edit them on Ulead but I have to remove the first frame of every clip because I get a black screen with this warning: Nothing to output. Bframe decoder lag :(

    Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I Hate this camera. It's very annonying to work with on imovie and macs in general. I regret buying it. Sure it beats a camera phone and it's tiny and I can carry it in my purse to record moments like people being crazy on the subway at random but otherwise I hate it.

I agree. software terrible. Btw, bought a TinyRig from spiderbrace.com that's helped me get steadier shots, flips so damn light.

  • Sam Heather 6 months ago
The Flip isn't a replacement for a real camcorder, but it is a lot better than your cell phone. It doesn't have optical image stabilization, so your videos are going to be shaky even with software trying to fix it. flip-video-review.com has some more details about it.
  • Hi Sam,

I recently purchased a Flip Ultra HD and found that when I upload videos to Youtube, Vimeo or email them (and listen to them) the sound becomes warped and distorted. There is a kind of annoying droning echoing sound in the background. This sound is not heard when saving the videos to Flipshare or listening to the recording on my camera. My computer meets all the spec requirements. I have contacted Flip and thay say that it is out of their hands because it sounds fine on Flipshare. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. You can get back to me on:
    gennaroferra@yahoo.com

    Thanks,

Those having quality issues with Youtube and their Flip Ultra camcorders, I would suggest you export the file to your computer then upload that instead of using the YouTube transfer built into FlipShare. The quality is severely degraded. I love my Flip Ultra HD. The convenience of shooting to memory versus tape and the outstanding quality was what prompted me to buy the Canon HFS-10, leaving my DV format in the dust!

i'd like to buy a flip hd ultra, any suggestion for other (better) cameras of the same level (price)?
  • Ivy /Compos Mentis plus 4 months ago
that's great it gives the chance to expand memory, but will the battery last as long as i use all this memory i can add?when will it be released?
  • darkfox8963 plus 4 months ago
I dunno about it's battery, but if they use one similar to the Flip Mino, I know I can use all 60 minutes of video I have on there and still have 50-75% full battery.
  • Ivy /Compos Mentis plus 4 months ago
that would be good, available from september. kodak resolution is a lot better, max for flip is 1280x720 on HD models, kodak has 1920x1080
  • Ivy /Compos Mentis plus 4 months ago
the battery is the same for both models, zi8 and mino, lithium-ion rechargeable. the flip ultra uses AA rechargeables batteries

I love my Flip Mino HD as a camera to just carry around with me all the time in case there is something I want to film. The picture quality is really good, and I made a wide angle lens attachment for it. My basic workflow is to import the flip video just by dragging it off the drive (I don't like their software). Then I use MPEG Streamclip to batch convert the video to Apple ProRes, then I edit in Final Cut. I would never shoot actual work with it cause it's got no external mic support and once you hit 60 minutes you're done unless you have a computer to download to. But it's a heck of a lot easier to just throw in my bag than my HDV camera.

Some video I took with it: vimeo.com/5852788

    I got mine at B&H for $176. It's currently $188 there.

i have a flip ultra hd. the video quality is far superior to my exilm z1000 10.1 mp camera. hd makes a big difference - also flip is better in low light and weird light (like stage lights, fire, etc) if that matters to you.

    but....

my flip has serious battery issues. look up battery problems and flip and you'll find a bunch of po'd people w/ same problem. mine sometimes charges part way tells me it's charged then runs out of juice, sometimes refuses to charge at all, sometimes stops charging and tells me it's too hot. i am about to send it in. hopefully they can fix it - i was really hopeful about it.

Since I downloaded the new version of software for my Flip Ultra, all of the video clips I download are in reverse order, making it impossible for me to conveniently make complete videos editing the clips together.

When I downloaded video clips before and then tried to make a movie, they were all in chronological order.

Now when I try to make a movie, the clips are in reverse order making it almost impossible to move around, especially when you have more than 20 clips, which I often do.

Unfortunately, their software designers have "upgraded" an easy-to-use video camera into a useless piece of plastic crap.

I have a Flip Ultra that I've used to film my band for a year now. I later spung for the Flip Mineo but I found it unusable because of it's ultra sensitive mic in high decible settings. The Flip doesn't take fantastic video... however the Ultra does take decent low light video... surprisingly much better than my panasonic GS35 miniDV. For quick portable video it just may be the trick.
