Hi. I was thinking about shooting a short film almost entirely blurry for an effect. I just want to know if there is any real aesthetic differences between shooting something really out of focus and shooting it in focus and adding a gaussian blur or something in post.

Shooting it normal would be easier, because I could control really finely tweak how the end product looks. On the other hand shooting it out of focus would probably have a more organic feel.

Software is not a problem, I'm running Final Cut Express and I'm sure it can handle something like that.

Right now I'm leaning towards shooting it out of focus, but I want to get some other people's input.

    Thanks!

Well if you shoot it the way you want to from the get go, you have it ready to go. You don't have to waste time processing it in FCE. And you are right, it will be more organic if you do it in camera. Because in a sense, you are doing it on the spot, as it is happening. None of this robot shit.

Without a doubt, shoot it out of focus.

In general I say do as much 'in camera' effects as possible. This goes for any effect, really. Just look at Michel Gondry's work (especially on his short films) if you plan ahead and do stuff for real it looks MUCH better.

Gondry mentions (in a commentary on one of his dvds) a film either he or someone else made in which they dimmed all the lights on a set instead of doing a simple fade to black in post. You can imagine the depth of the fade, where each piece of furniture became dark individually... shadows increased and darkness engulfed everything instead of just a stale post production fade. I mean, this is an extreme example but do you see my point?

    I ramble, bloop.
