As a classical musician, I would like to be able to upload audio of at least CD quality (e.g., a 16/44 .wav file) with my video and have it presented without alteration.

WAVE files and the audio in a video file are two separate things. WAVE files are pretty big and not very internet friendly. most files online have to be compressed and downgraded in order to make things faster and more easily handled (i.e, smaller files). MP3s at 192 kbps are a lot smaller and considered CD quality.

try AAC and "lossless" audio codecs when compressing your videos. i have found those to have excellent audio quality. here's a similar discussion:

Thanks, but I don't consider mp3 at 192kb/s as of CD quality. 320 would be acceptable... barely. I don't know of lossless codecs. In the Caltech Music Lab some years ago, we found that lossless bit-compression could lose about 30% of the file size, not more. Is AAC the old Dolby system? If so, I'm not nuts about it, either. Just hard to please, I guess.

To be fair to all the users, you are not going to see CD quality lossless codecs for streaming on the internet. Not even iTunes does this nor any fancy radio stations via the net. To be fair, i mean, there has to be a point where the speed and quality match the average user of a site.

Also to be fair, Vimeo has the feature of being able to download the original movie file. This is a feature you can turn on or off.

But no, you are not going have CD quality or lossless sound because that just eats up too much bandwidth.

James, can you honestly hear the difference between 320 and 192 or is it just that you know that there is a difference? if you're a stickler for "quality" then you will not be satisfied with any audio online for a while. to my ears MP3s at 192 kbps or lossless audio sound just fine. then again, i'm more about the content than getting the best quality possible. :)

I usually convert to a wav file when editing, and export as AAC. The quality is good I think.

Didn't know Vimeo allowed downloading original file. Thanks, for info., Ian L. Bandwidth will cease to be a problem when we all go optical, eh? But at some point digital manufacturers will have to offer converters that are better than 15, 16 or 17 bits. All the boxes advertising themselves as "24-bit" are only so in *format*, not *performance*. The sound of true 18-bit performance would come as a revelation to most.

Hey it's the same in the video world. HD is only HD in format not performance in most cases as well.

The download of original file is an option available ONLY to viewers with a vimeo account.
