Here's the problem I've had in the past; when videos are embedded using Internet Explorer, they don't show up. Just a white box. So, I go into Firefox, embed the video, and it works fine.

Here's the problem I have today, 10/19/07; no videos are working in Internet Explorer, period.

I've convinced everyone in my organization to go over to Vimeo because I love it. The Scoop: we (theworldracedotorg) have people on mission trips all over the world that are uploading videos and then embedding them on their blogs. We're getting a lot of really great content, but, because all the videos are being uploaded from internet cafes overseas, I have to go in and re-embed the videos so IE users can see them. This has been an acceptable solution until today.

I really, really, really don't want to use youtube (I LOVE Vimeo)...but I might need to if this doesn't work.

    HELP!!

So do Vimeo videos not play in IE at ALL, or just embeds? Have you tried on other peoples computers? Can you give me a link to a blog that you're having trouble with?
  •
  • Erin Standley 4 years ago
I am also having a similar (same?) problem. I uploaded a video using Firefox 2.0.0.9 and used the embedding code supplied by Vimeo while using Firefox to embed the video here: tinyxl.com (you have to scroll down to see it). When you look at tinyxl.com in Internet Explorer 6.0.2, the video shows up as a white box, whereas it works perfectly in Firefox. Any ideas on how to make it work in IE?

Embedded videos not working in IE 6.0 or 7.0. IE requires the tag.
  • Soxiam staff 4 years ago
hey can you tell us what you mean by "the tag"? we've been testing embedded videos on IEs here but we cannot reproduce what you're describing.
  •
  • Knox Jewelers 4 years ago
Oops, my mistake. I forgot to include the word "embed" as in "IE requires the embed tag."
  • Soxiam staff 4 years ago
there are some instances where our object code causes problems (btw, we're looking into making our embedded player more compliant) but these have usually been with the certain blog platforms, not the browsers. like i've said before we've tested our object code in ie6 and 7 and couldn't reproduce the problem. where are you embedding these videos?
  •
I have this issue in WordPress / IE7. I found embed-code here vimeo.com/forums/topic:2009 but that doesn't work either.
  •
  • curvesalot 4 years ago
yes using IE & here and embedding using Windows Live writter, xanga, blogger, myspace, all don't work. Thats one reason I havent been able to use vimeo for a long time, but you tuibe sucks, and if vimeo could fix, this I would soo use it more often!
  • Joshua Nelson 3 years ago
Okay - I was having the same problem as you using Windows Live Writer. WLW tries to "fix" the Vimeo embed code I think or it just plain has a bug. Here is what you need to do. Create your whole post using whichever "view" mode you want to (i.e. Normal, Web Layout, Web Preview, or HTML Code). However, when you get ready to paste in your HTML code, go to the HTML Code mode and paste in your embed code where you want the video to show up and publish from there !!!WITHOUT!!! going back to Web Preview or Web Layout. If you do go to one of those modes, for some reason WLW takes out some code from embed code near the end of the code.

This worked for me! Let me know if it doesn't for you....Josh

  • Soxiam staff 3 years ago
let me guess these are all private videos right? if so, you can only watch private videos on the browser you used to log into vimeo. if you are logged out, you won't see the videos. if you are using another browser and not logged in, you won't see the videos.

I am getting complaints from IE users that Vimeo video placed on my site is not working and showing up as white boxes. The videos are located at: tns-us.com/greenlife/

I looked at them in IE and they were fine. Not sure if this is Flash issue, browser issue, Vimeo issue? Is there a different embed code I should try?
  • Blake Whitman staff 3 years ago
not sure, we kinda need more info to look into this issue. You still receiving these complaints?
  • TNS plus 3 years ago
what kind of information do you need?
  •
  • Jamie Thingelstad plus 3 years ago
I'm having really big problems with embedded videos on my site and IE users. It works fine in other browsers, and I think it's an issue with flash versions. I think it also may only happen when the widescreen player is used. See this URL:

    thingelstad.com/great-music-greg-merkle/

If you go there with IE (and dozens of visitors have told me this) you get an error on page load that is very cryptic, some object error. Then the page reverts to the IE "network connection reset" page. If you hit the "Back" button the page that you originally requested will show. Perhaps the onLoad events aren't triggered then?

Anyway, this ONLY happens if a Vimeo video is embedded. Help?!?!?! It's 100% reproducible for me. If you need screenshots, let me know and I'll go get some.
  • Soxiam staff 3 years ago
our embed code looks fine on that page. the ie's 'operation aborted' error usually occurs when you have a missing closing tag somewhere on the page.
  •
  • Jamie Thingelstad plus 3 years ago
So you can see this behavior, here is a video of the page loading and the error being thrown.

    vimeo.com/1092751
  •
  • Jamie Thingelstad plus 3 years ago
Alright -- you guys suggested I had broken HTML on my page so I went digging. In fact, I did have one broken HTML tag on my page and I removed it from the page. However, this doesn't make the problem go away.

I went and looked further and indeed confirmed that on the exact same browser, this page with Vimeo embedded video works great

    thingelstad.com/flashback-bigcharts-on-cnbc/

while this page causes the "Internet Explorer cannot open (URL). Operation aborted." bug.

    thingelstad.com/great-music-greg-merkle

Both of these URL's are from the same site, with the same theme, and same surrounding HTML. The 4:3 one works fine, no issues. The 16:9 one throws that bug, everytime.

Several visitors to my site are still reporting these issues... my only fix for now is to move the Vimeo embeds to a single page view only as it completely hoses things up.

I really don't see how this can be an issue with my site given that the 4:3 player works, and the 16:9 player doesn't.

    Help?

This is with Flash Player WIN 9,0,124,0 on Win XP SP3 using IE 7.0.5730.11.
  •
  • Jamie Thingelstad plus 3 years ago
Just to be really whacky and try yet another alternative -- I switched WordPress themes completely and still have the same issue as above.
  • Casey Pugh plus 3 years ago
I've done some testing with our player on your website, and I can't seem to get rid of the error. I'm pretty sure that our embed code is not the root of the problem, though.

If you try using our embed code on a blank HTML page it works fine. You'll also notice if you try to embed a youtube video on your page it will also get the "Operation Aborted".

So there's something going on with your page that affects the embed code of both youtube and vimeo, I just don't know what it is. Let me know if you figure anything out.
  • Jamie Thingelstad plus 3 years ago
Thanks for the reply Casey -- I WAS able to get rid of the error, just by changing the embed code. I went and looked at the Vimeo embeds I had that worked, and then compared those to the ones that didn't work. There is a specific difference in the object tag. If I added the type="application/x-shockwave-flash" and also added a data="..." parameter, which were in the earlier video embed code, it works fine in IE.

I put the examples of non-working and then what I changed to make it work in a text file. Here is a link (no way I could get this posted on the forms due to extensive HTML syntax)

    wiki.thingelstad.com/Main/VimeoEmbedDebugging

It seems to just be a problem with the object tag. Again, no changes on any of my HTML. I did this with a new video I just uploaded that wouldn't work, and also fixed one of the prior ones that weren't working.

Your videos work perfectly for me in both IE6 & 7.

On a side note, you have a javascript include on your site that's getting a 404:
"The requested URL /validate/lib/jquery.delegate.js was not found on this server."
  •
  • Aksel Morisse 3 years ago
All Vimeo videos are showing as white boxes for me, on both IE6 and IE7, on two separate computers. Not only on the site I'm working on ( akselmorisse.se/ ), but also on any page on vimeo.com.

If I right-click on the box, the contextual menu says "Movie not loaded... - About Flash Player 9..."

In Firefox and Safari, everything is fine.
  •
  • Aksel Morisse 3 years ago
Ok, I seem to have fixed the problem by removing the extra linebreaks I had added to the embed code for clarity. Stupid bloody Internet Exploder.
  •
  • Aksel Morisse 3 years ago
Ah, no; that only fixed it for IE7. IE6 is still not playing nice.

Flash Player 9 is installed, I've cleared the cache and cookies etc, and no Vimeo videos are loading.

    Baffled.

    hello,

    got the ~same problem.

videos are not showing in IE nut working fine in FF.

it must be an issue between flash content and IE in general (same problem yith youtube). i found sites that work but mine does not.
tried a lot . i changed the code added js by dreamweaver... no results...

heres the link to the page: visuals.martinlorenz.at/

i cant ignore this, as there are still people out there using IE (why?!?)
anyway, i am very glad for any help or advice!!!!!!
  • Soxiam staff 3 years ago
you are not using the embed code as is. there's a script that's running on that page that's doing something to our embed code. it's definitely not IE per se, since i can view other embedded vimeo videos on other sites.
  •
  • .mrt 3 years ago
yes true. but before i installed this script (dreamweaver put it in automatically) i couldnt even load the page in IE...
the first time an error message popup showed up. but if i reloaded it (just hit enter another time) it worked.... (but without showing the vids...
i figured it is better to leave in the js so the site can be showen in IE and i can write to use firefox...

anyway i had the same problem testing it without the script. something must be rotten with my code. but what?
maybe its not even the embeded code...

have you experienced indifferences between lightbox and vimeo (or other vids ) if used at the same page?

by the way, thanks for your super rapid support!
and i have to say i will use vimeo from now on and ditch my youtube account. you guys are really sympatic!

    greetings from vienna! .mrt

i have a similar issue that i tried looking for but to no avail, when i try to put my channels url in Internet Explorer 6 it wont work, untill you go to the page where it says, you may click this link, and its the SAME link i just posted in the address bar, but then and only then does it it work. i know its not a problem with this particular site, but any site that uses extensionless urls, meaning a url that doesnt have a / marking a folder or any type of html, php, any other extension. does anyone know what what should go at the end to work around this? i dont wanna have to explain to the major ie6 users what to do. thanks.

Jamie Thingelstads solution worked for me. Check out his link: wiki.thingelstad.com/Main/VimeoEmbedDebugging
Find the first piece of code, the 'object tag' he identifies as being a problem for IE. Modify it so that it looks like the next line of code in his post.

I am getting the following error in IE6 - BTW where do i go to edit the HTML for the factory pages that Vimeo gives you? I simply uploaded a video and sometimes it works in IE and sometimes it does not. I have the error here and I will put a link to the video. If I come back in like 2 hours it will work - maybe for a day or so then all the sudden it does not. When it does not work in IE - I go to FF and it works fine.
    Here is the error:

    Line: 266
    Char: 1
    Error: Object expected
    Code:0
    URL: vimeo.com/1623090

In IE 7 I get an extra message saying “moogaloop” is undefined

I saw some fix in this thread to add additional data but where do I do that for my video I simply posted here?
Again all I did was upload write a few comments then saved it. No other tweaks or changes made.
Ok I have tested this on IE 6 and 7 with Vista, XP Pro as the OS
I had to get on Firefox to even post a message no matter what machine I use out of 3 PCs.
I think there must be something on vimeo that cycles through or cleans up then I can see if I wait a few hours.

Let me also add that I can not view any videos anywhere on vimeo when this happens. No matter who put it up there and what format it is. Thats why I am leaning towards something the server is trying to dish up across all videos.

thanks for any help on this.

I have the same problem. Embedded videos can't be viewed in Internet Explorer. Fine on all other browsers.

    Any ideas?

It's more than a pain, it means that we can't use vimeo, except if we are on Vimeo.com. It means that I can't embed my vimeo video on my site to encourge viewers to look at more of my vimeo videos. As much as I'm loth to do this I might have to go back to youtube if there isn't a solution.

Vimeo seems so smart, they MUST have tested their embed on all the most popular browsers. They MUST know it will make people leave if it doesn't work. We MUST be missing something. I just wonder what it is?
  •
  • Cyril Lecocq 3 years ago
    No admin ?
  •
  • The "white video box" seems to be a problem bigger than Vimeo.

At least when it affects ALL Flash video, not just the embedded Moogaloop.

No Flash videos at all are showing with IE7 and IE8 (Vista-32). This is on vimeo.com, YouTube etc..
    Firefox, Safari are fine.

Can't figure out what's wrong, but it could be a security problem with Flash player and IE. Maybe a 3rd party program is interfering or my PC has Spyware that remains undetected.

Can you guys download files without issues?
Another bad IE symptom is the message "IE can't download... etc... The requested site is either unavailable or can't be found".

From the looks of the thread, it doesn't seem this issue has been resolved yet.

I am seeing my embeds in FireFox, but not in IE versions 6.0 & 7.0.

However, I AM seeing the embeds in IE that some other users have posted above:

    THESE WORK IN IE: eaglepointe.org/eaglepointe/guest/about.html

    buildingamoderncampus.com

THIS DOES NOT WORK IN IE: camerashymedia.com/newsite/

The ONLY differences in the embed code between theirs and mine are video dimensions, colors, and video IDs.

    So what am I missing?

Would it matter WHERE the web page is being hosted, even though the Vimeo code all comes from the same place?

    Thanks for any insight!

I am having the same problem. I am viewing my website (lettersoflove.net) in IE 7 and the Vimeo embedded video shows up as if it were an image that doesn't exist (ie, transparent box with red X in the upper left corner). I am using WordPress as my site's CMS, but the video is not embedded in a WP page; it's embedded on the site's WP index.php.

I can see my video in Firefox, Safari, and Opera. I have tried removing the embed tags. I've tried just refreshing.

I went with Vimeo because other video uploading sites have too much down time and other issues. Most users on the web still use IE, so this should be fixed.

I cannot believe this is an issue ... Didn't even know it existed until people started asking why they couldn't see my videos.

Shocking that after a YEAR no one has fixed this bug.

As a new Plus member and a long-time advocate of Vimeo, this is really crap.

Is this a Vimeo Fail? Hmmm

    Common, do something about it.

this isn't a year long bug. it's several different things we've addressed where people have been posting to this one thread. do you have an example of a video you are having problems with in ie? if so, please post the url so we can have a look.

    Thanks for the reply.

Ok, I get it. You're right. Lots of issues but not all the same. Fair enough. :-)

I've uploaded a bunch of videos in the past week or so, and none of them play on IE/Vista. Not on Vimeo. Not as an embed. Nothing. ... Or, at least I cannot see them in IE from this machine and I don't have a second machine running Vista from which I can check it.

To clarify: I can see the video player. The bar loads. The custom image is there. But nothing happens. They don't play.

    Examples:
    vimeo.com/3669361
    vimeo.com/3573580
    vimeo.com/3567433

    Please help.

    Thanks,

hmm... i just checked all 3 of these videos on vista/ie7 and they all played for me. do you by any chance have anything like antivirus or popup blocker app running on vista? if so, could you turn them off and see if you can play these videos?

Antivirus? Really? Well, yes, I use one. Sophos. Popup blocker is disabled. Why would an antivirus program or a popup blocker stop videos from playing? Can you explain?

I can play videos from plenty of other places/sites/player. So I have touble understanding why the issue is with my machine. Maybe you can help me understand?

Thanks and lemme know any info you need.

i am just trying to eliminate the possibilities. like i've said, i've tested these videos from vista/ie7 and they played for me.

As Scott Ayres (below) seems to confirm, this looks like an issue bigger than my machine.

Do let me know what I can do to help and what's being done to fix this frustrating bug.

    Thanks!

Another week ... Still no fix and no word. As a Pro (paying member of Vimeo) I find this most upsetting. Given HD on YouTube, you have to start asking yourself .............

Common, please. A bit of help here.

george, like i've said above, we have tested the videos you've mentioned in vista/ie7. this is not a bug on our end and we cannot individually support each member's setup.

I didn't think I was the only one given some of the other feedback. I'll have access to a few other machines when I'm back at work and will try there ....
