I know this is a long shot, but since there is a 1080p function, why can't we also have a high bitrate 720p function? Most videos look fine with the current bitrate at 720p, but videos with tons of motion just look terrible.

This may be a bad example, because it is an experimental film and most people don't care, but my video here: vimeo.com/18163762 has tons of motion, and almost all of the sharpness has been drained from the film, because of the consistent motion (Feel free to download it if you want to see the huge difference).

Why not offer a High Bitrate 720p encode the same way a 1080p encode is offered? 5000kb/s 720p instead of 5000kb/s1080 (or what ever the numbers are).

The exact same playback issues would be present, so i don't think people would overuse the function beyond what was necessary.

Please!?

Hahah woah, this video is like an encoders worst nightmare!

The main problem here isn't the bitrate, it's that our encoder just isn't designed to handle a video like this. It isn't the high motion, it's that there are no cuts or scene changes for most of the video, it just gets more and more complex. Encoders get most of their quality by saving bits where they can (dark scenes, static scenes, etc) and then pumping up the bitrate for things like wipes or pans or overlays where the whole image is changing. If the whole image is constantly changing it's going to end up looking pretty muddled unfortunately.

5Mbps might help but isn't really a very reasonable number, almost nobody could play it without some really significant buffering and most users don't understand bitrate or care to wait. I think something like this would be so rarely used it's not worth building unfortunately. That said, we're always tweaking and bumping up quality.

5mbps was just what I understood to be the bitrate that 1080p was encoded to. I am acknowledging that it would buffer much more slowly, but what ever the case, it would be the same as watching a 1080p video on vimeo.

I hear ya though, I know that video is a pain to encode (I did encode a version at 5mbps though, and it looked a ton better than that)

But even for a video that isn't that crazy, like the following: vimeo.com/21355752
True, there are no cuts in this one, but there are at least similar elements from frame to frame, and some dark tunnels here and there. If you watch it, The very first tunnel the train comes out of, there is blocky resolution loss.
Right now that video is 1080p, I would much rather it be a high [(1080p] bitrate version at 720p resolution.

I have talked to other people who said that they would love this feature, and have seen it also talked about on other forums as well. Just saying, there might be more desire for this feature than you know, for those who really desire quality over speed for their work, and who might use vimeo as a sort of portfolio.
