I spent the whole day today installing NLEs and tools and trying them around in order to write a big guide on how to export with these popular tools for Vimeo's 720p HD service. Using these guides you will be able to achieve de-interlaced 720p footage (no jaggies) at around 5mbps and with a preferred frame rate.

If you are using a different NLE/utility you can send step-by-step screenshots to me to update the post. The exporting panels should show how to export in *either* h.264, WMV or XViD, have de-interlacing, bitrate, frame rate, aspect ratio/size options etc. In other words, the exporting options suggested should accept as source an HDV/HD/AVCHD file and create a valid 1280x720 progressive video file.
I have a question for vimeo.com posters. What is the bare minimum software I need to upload video clips to the vimeo website.
I do not need editing, frame inserts or anything fancy. Just take a MTS file as captured by the camera and convert to upload to Vimeo
I have the lame pixela software that comes with the canon HF100, which allows exporting files as-is to 3 formats (the largest of which is 720:480, MPEG-2 resolution). The resulting video on vimeo.com is not HD quality needless to say.
Do I need to buy additional software to do this simple task? Is there anything free that will do this ?
UPDATE: There is a free way:
eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2008/05/04/avchd-transcoding-using-free-tools/
thanks!
I updated the post above to also include Avid Xpress btw.
I am pretty sure that the tutorial is self-explanatory, it just requires your attention a bit.
As for de-interlace, this is a different thing. De-interlacing and pulldown removal is not the same thing. De-interlacing is available on the h.264 .mov exporting dialogs, but not in the MP4 ones. I hope Apple adds the option there too...
many thanks for all the work.. really.
i'm an avid xpress user so i'm not sure if you or maybe your friend can answer me:
i shoot 25p
and i open a 1080/50i project (the only option for hdv)
do i also need to apply the filmfluid rendering before exporting?
or shooting at 25p is enough?
tnx!!
it would still remain progressive... am i wrong?
I'll soon take a few stills on Avid DS HD and Digital-Rapids so you can add them also.
Cheers from Portugal, Carlos Filipe

This utility separates then recombines the video and audio of your file into a PS3 compatible mp4 file. It does not recompress. It's fast. Under 10 minutes to remux 109 minute 720p mov file.

What could I have done better, for a better vid?
I:\programs\ffmpeg>ffmpeg.exe -deinterlace -y -i "T:\video\20080211\one.M2TS" -threads 2 -pass 1 -f mp4 -title "One Test" -vcodec h264 -level 41 -refs 2 -loop 1 -deblockalpha 0 -deblockbeta 0 -parti4x4 1 -partp8x8 1 -partb8x8 1 -me full -subq 6 -brdo 1 -me_range 21 -s 1280x720 -r 24000/1001 -b 4096k -bt 4096k -bufsize15000k -maxrate 16000k -g 300 -coder vlc -acodec aac -ac 2 -ab 128k "one_720p-24.mp4"

So I switched the video codec to libx264:

Note, the names of encoders and decoders do not always match, so there are
several cases where the above table shows encoder only or decoder only entries
even though both encoding and decoding are supported. For example, the h263
decoder corresponds to the h263 and h263p encoders, for file formats it is even
worse.

Thanks for your help with everything!
Since Vimeo uses Flash to recode, do you know what their settings are so I can use SIMPLE to make FLASH version that works on Vimeo. I'm looking to make small meg files and mimic vimeo's flash version.

Use "25" frame rate for 25p PAL, or "24000/1001" for 24p (without quotes), instead of the suggested NTSC 30000/1001 if required. Also modify the input filename, of course.

Do I have to be 24fps here in Vimeo?
In your opinion whats the best editor for uploading HD from a AVCHD camera to Vimeo and getting the highest quality end result?
As for AVCHD-to-Vimeo, the best way to do it, is the way we show in this tutorial. That's why I wrote the tutorial. Then, it's up to Vimeo to not use too low bitrate and make the quality worse -- you can't control that part.
-Pinnacle Sudio 11 Ultimate (plus version works too)
--The installation of this software could have been simplified but once installed it is very simple to use.
-I export to WMV using the following 720p settings:
--Video: 1280 x 720, 8000 kbps, 60 fps
--Audio: 192 kbps, 16 bit, 5.1 surround, 44 kHz
You may say, wow 8Mbps is too much, but I also stream these WMV files to my Xbox 360 and they play beautifully, and great sound too. You may downgrade to 4Mbps/Stereo for Vimeo if you wish.
Play around with the WMV profiles and perhaps create one of your own. I suggest downloading Windows Media Encoder application straight from Microsoft and tweaking the profiles to your needs. Let me know if you need help with this.
Cheers.
Does anyone have the same kind of problems with iMovie 06?
I made a 1 minute video clip with lots of motions, and encoded it to H.264 at several different settings; Key Frames, Dimensions, etc., always using QuickTime, because I don't have any other software to do it.
The results were that, I could not get it right.
The ugly interlace lines were always there.
Whether you check "deinterlace source video" or not, it does not make any difference.
I was so disappointed.
Then, I tried to "de-interlace" using "JES Deinterlacer": a freeware introduced here by Eugenia, and after many tries, finally I arrived to get my video encoded nicely without ugly interlace lines.
First, export the video from iMovie HD 6 to AIC at 1920 x 1080i, then "de-interlace" it with "JES Deinterlacer", and output again to AIC.
Open it with QuickTime, and convert it to H.264 at 1280 x 780 HD.
This is it, and the result is a nice progressive video clip without ugly interlace lines.
After all, it seems so simple, but it took so many tries to get here, and I am quite tired.
But anyway, I am so glad, and I thank you very much, Eugenia.
I hope that this would help you too, Pauline.
everything was working well until i began rendering. the screen said "Resolution exceeds 1024 x 1024"
?
thank you very much for your time.
think you for this
I don't have a problem as such getting my finished movie onto Vimeo using recommendations found here, but I was wondering how should I export my movie for archival purposes (the best quality possible)?
I don't have a need to save my event clips I just want to save my movie on an external drive that I can later use VisualHub to put it on my AppleTV or some other device or web site.
Anyone have any suggestions?
PS
The file I archive I may want to reload in iMovie at a later time to grab some stuff from it and use it elsewhere.
Thanks
Paul
Even ProRes is not lossless.
AND
"I know it's not lossless."
And if you ARE using PRO, then the only other explanation is that you are using a pirated version of Vegas Pro. The pirated version is missing a whole bunch of codecs, which make Vegas useless.
Hope you can help me, thanks!
(1) since I can't view m2ts files on computers w/o the crummy Pixela SW that came w/ the computer. Is there a converter to take m2ts to wmv, or mpeg 4 or something natively viewable on Windows based machines that is supported by Vimeo? I just saw the tutorial at the top of this page, so I'm going to try that, but I'm REALLY trying to avoid buying a macPro w/ a gazillion GB drive and RAM to store/edit our movies.
(2) lacking a positive answer to (1), do you have plans to add m2ts to supported formats on Vimeo?
I'm way out of my league here and just starting to get into making videos, so I'm going to ask some simple questions...
1. What size should I expect the files to be (using the info in your tutorial) if I'm using a really old non-HD camera (Canon ZR 45 MC) and converting them to .mov files with Adobe Premiere Elements 2?
2. Using Adobe PE 2 I don't see an option to select de-interlace when I convert to .mov. Is it included in another setting so that in selecting that setting de-interlacing is turned on? I don't see it on your screen shots for PE 4 either, so it makes me think it's not a PE 2 vs. PE 4 difference.
Thanks for any help.
In Premiere Elements 2, there isn't an option for Adobe Media Encoder, so I chose QuickTime with the h.264 codec. I initially chose "Movie" which creates an avi, but I didn't see options there that looked like h.264. Does it sound like I need to go up to PE4 (or move over to Vegas?)
As for the file size, I was wondering about the size of the file that you would upload to vimeo - I realize it would depend on many things, but just a ballpark per minute. Using the QuickTime option with the h.264 codec and the settings you described I got ~270 MB for a minute video. Is that an average size?
1. How big is the file size of the video that you referenced on another tutorial, I think it was "Around the Home"? (The video is awesome by the way.)
2. How big is too big in terms of having people view them with an embed player?
