We just discovered vimeo - and we're amazed by the quality of the videos on your site. So amazed - that we're planning on redesigning our entire website to feature embeded videos from vimeo.

However - we just found out that you can't have HD quality on an embed!

    What gives!?

simple economics is what's driving that decision for right now.

Then why dont you charge for it? Seems like a simple economic solution.

    Wise beyond your avatar.

Why charge for it, isn't vimeo supposed to be a free community site? Especially for the HD part, that's my favorite part. I mean, figure out what you can and make it work, but HD embedding for free would be the ultimate vimeo (:
  • Blake Whitman staff 7 months ago
as sox said, it would cost us much dinero to give away free HD embedding.

a tree that grew hundred dollar bills would be the ultimate vimeo

Oh, and a suggestion that's probably been tossed around like crazy, for embedding, how about an option for 480p. It'd probably take less bandwith and wouldn't slow down too many computers, since the new computer age is growing.

take a look at stage6 if you want hd embedding

and if you like proprietary plugins
  • Brian 7 months ago
Isn't Adobe Flash a proprietary plugin?

    Or am I missing something?

I don't remember any option to install another companies version of "Flash".

  • i would GLADLY pay for HD embeds. Not a problem. I would gladly spread the word around on my twitter network as well and sing from the heavens about how awesome vimeo works.

iz tell thee no lie! :)

I'd pay for it as well. Can you do that? Can I pay someone on here to allow HD embedding? If the demand is there why not capitalise on it.

Starting paid services on Vimeo will be a major step technically, so it is being approached with appropriate planning and diligence.

as dalas already pointed out we've been looking into offering pro account. aside from the technical challenges, we also want to get this right if we were to offer such program. there are *a lot* of factors at work which may not be immediately clear. we need to work out the unit economics to make sure it's a sustainable and scalable program. we also want to fully address the value propositions to our wonderful users. we wouldn't feel right about slapping on few meaningless features or simply increase your usage restriction just to charge few people who are willing to pay for those benefits. we are looking at our users' needs, competitive landscape and our product development plans to see if there can be a compelling reason to offer and support such program. we are flattered each and everyday when people ask about the possibility of paying for a pro account. we will try our best to honor your trust and support. and we hope we will be able to offer a solution that makes vimeo a place where you would be proud to make your investment. thanks.

well as soon as pro accounts are available if they do indeed become available i will consider purchasing one especially if it means increased upload restrictions and hd embedding as vimeo seems to be by far the best way to serve our video tutorials etc to the members of our forum.

Agree. I love Vimeo but will need more capacity and embedded hd eventually. Would be ashame if I have to move to an other service. By the way, Stage6 is lacking a lot of other functionality that is available on Vimeo.

I just discovered vimeo and hd about three weeks ago. Got so excited about all the high quality stuff here that I went and got a new Canon HV20..Felt alittle bummed out when I tried to embed my hd clip and realized that it wasnt going to work. On the other hand, I still haven't figured out how they are paying for storage space and traffic for these huge files. Wouldnt want to be the straw that broke the camel's back. I would personally rather use a link to a vimeo page than have to pay for an embedded video.

Im using both stage6 and vimeo. Stage6 has the advantage that it offers the video in larger size when you stream and it has a black background which for me is a really important thing.

But Vimeo works better uploading and its better in funtionality.

Stage6 has now been shut down. Veoh.com is the new site that took over for Stage6. I spent about 2 minutes on that site and couldn't take it anymore. I hope vimeo never becomes overrun with so much crap like that.
  • Blake Whitman staff 5 months ago
that is most definitely not the plan.

If Vimeo wants to beat competitors like YouTube and get away with the premier of 'supporting' HD - truly HD should be supported in the embeds..! I can't imagine there wouldn't be investors interested in putting money in the venture.

Money shouldn't be the bottleneck for all this great innovation.

    Period.

(maybe it's just an ego trip of Vimeo not supporting HDembeds to get traffic to their own website...?!)

are you aware that vimeo is not an independently owned company looking for vc money?

I dont think anythings wrong with that. I could be wrong, but I think Vimeo wants to be a destination site & not just some generic server space where a user uploads all their content & embeds it somewhere else, a la BlipTV. Hopefully the Pro membership will explore this even more.

And I also don't think YouTube is even on their radar. Two completely different services with different goals.

bingo. always has been. always will be.
  • Westframe 4 months ago
Okay, okay. No need for stress. It's my lack of knowledge.

Still, full HD support would be cool ;)
