I recently bought the SR12 i really like it...... but although it doesn't seem to affect it it has dust in the inside of the lens.... one looks like a tiny hair.... and off the camera the footage is really good .... But once put on DVD .... i don't like it at all.... The HV20-30 look like really good cameras even when video made smaller too . like on you tube the quality looks great.... I know the way you render has alot to do with it but still the majority of good videos come from the HV's..... just ... thinking of what to do ..... i have a couple of days to return my SR12... But ... i really do not want to do the wrong thing.... please i need advice... Oh... and the AVCHD format is really hard to edit too....

I have two HV30s with no regrets, and I would drop the AVCHD camera without any hesitation. AVCHD is a processor hog and uses a lower bitrate than HDV. Forums are full of people's grief about AVCHD and although I'm sure there are workarounds, why not go for a more elegant workflow? That's why I got the HV30 instead of the new flash based HF10 (which uses AVCHD). I would have loved the non-tape feature, but the HV30 has a larger chip and HDV is just a better format to work with. MPEG2 is also decent, but the HV30 has 24p AND now has 30p too (the only camera that has it as far as I know) Some AVCHD cameras even flash a warning whenever you pan "too fast" due to compression issues. I'll be the decider on how fast I want to pan...

How long does the tape last in HD mode...??
  • A 60 minute miniDV tape will record up to 63 minutes of HDV.

Do you need special HDV tapes for Hi def recording..... ima really leaning to getting the HV30.......
  • No. I use a Sony HDR-HC1 and recently got a Sony HDR-FX1. Both *can* use the expensive, special HD tapes, but I use plain old Sony Premium tapes ~$3 each...

The HV30 is a better camera. But the AVCHD cameras soon enough will be better, just not yet.

I bit the bullet.... I am an owner of the HV30... got it last night. Gonna use it in a little bit... Just had to tell you guys the drama i had to go thru to get it...... I went to circuit city asked to exchange althou i knew they did not have one... they inspected it and seen the dust in the inside of the lens and agreed that they would classify that a deffect ok... so i said ill exchange it ... they looked for it and they didnt find it they said you have to return it..... OK then return it...They said But it's subject to a 15% restock fee... How much is that i asked .... 202 dollars she said..... :O long story short i had to get the camera plus other stuff to equal the amount i paid for the SR12.... 500 bucks worth... so i got a new Battery the only one they had and a ps3 with a game..... i only got it for the blueray thou....... i was pist !!!

That sucks Juan, the HV20 just went on sale here in canada for $699 canadian funds. Meaning it should be around $550-$600 US range when retailers catch on...

As for the PS3, Its ok man, you basicaly bought a blue-ray player (averages $300-$400), So you got all the other functions of the PS3 for free... Only small comment i can say that may make you feel a lil better.

At least you didn't buy the Panasonic SD9 to see one day later the HV20 go on sale localy. Even though i got the SD9 cheaper, i still would of prefered the Canon. Live and learn... And for once i saw the itiem shipped same day so i couldnt change my mind...

Thanks mark : ) i really like the HV30 ... it still cost $899.99 here and i have not even opened my ps3 or the game yet.....i have been busy your right thou now i feel i ended up OK.....the options on the HV30 are way better than the SR-12 plus i can actually edit on my cpu.... the AVCHD of the SR-12 was so hard to edit My CPU could not handle it..... the HDV files are no problem ....

At first I desided to go for Vixia HV30. I live in Europe, but want 30p, and Vega Pro8 will fix that.
Shutter 1/30 may also give "30p"?
Then I desided to go for SR12, as I can get one at nearly the same cost as HV30, and a lot of reviuws says SR12 is good for motion.
Today my camcorder is Panasonic NV-GS50.

My typical shooting, this is done by NV-GS50:

odd magne is PAL/NTSC an issue?
  • odd magne nilsen 4 months ago
Jason, no, PAL/NTSC isn't any issue.
  • Vasco Casquilho 3 months ago
Why is this not an issue? I live in Europe, can I just go and buy a HV30 in the US and use it here?

HMM.... dont get me wrong the SR-12 is a great cam...... loved the 120GB hard drive the 10MP camera was one of the reasons i wanted to keep it.... Awesome pictures but i already have a DSLR.... so i wanted the cine mode and 24p ..... plus for real these files are allot easier to edit on the CPU than the AVCHD.... but it is a great cam.... next time i will probably buy its big brother..... by then ill probably get a faster CPU

    i think that:
for real "cine" mode you must have 35mm adapter with nikon lens, not "effects" only real cinemode by adapter. hv20 dont have real hi quality.
yes, editing AVCHD have some trouble with speed of CPU. But i have macpro with 2 processors and not have problem in this.

    sorry for my english
  • Juan C Lopez 3 months ago
Well brother exactly.... in your opinion.... in mine it's looks just great with out the 35mm adapter... But yes it looks much better with them allot better. Im going to win the lotto next week so ill be able to buy what ever i want ill put those on my list ....LOL...

Hi juan, may l know how you transfer the tape file data into your PC by using what software to get the data, is the data in mepg2 file format? how long do you need to transfer the Full 60min tape to PC?, after have a look at Pete Poliakov sample of video by sr11, is very hi quality video with nice music. l also now consider which one to get: HV30 or sony sr12. HV30 have manual aperture & shutter speed control, sony sr12 don't have. thank you

By all means i am not a pro ..... My vids should not be considered to make an opinion..... But there are many out here that will blow your mind awesome The one to consult is eugenia shes a pro at answering these questions... my personal opinion is the HV30 cause of the many options it offers.....and the esase of editing too compared to the avchd formatt... Oh... yeah capture is real time so the length of the video is the time of your capture... But if you dont have a Expensive macpro like richie rich pete..... it will take you longer to see what your editing..... stutters like CRAZY !!!!
