There are a bunch of reasons why this could benefit everyone involved, but my main take is that I want to be able to finish hacking up a post with an embedded vimeo video, and then go about my business. When I'm notified about my vimeo video being ready, boom - all i have to do is press 'publish' and i'm done.

Also, i might even like to publish the video before it's ready. I have that exact situation right now. It's fine if there's a blank screen, or an advertisement, or whatever sitting there. Maybe there are some things that can be done with that - grab a single frame of the video and use that as a placeholder until the full video is ready to be streamed - whatever.

Also, I uploaded a 350MB file and the progress monitor got stuck on 99%. It looks like it's going to go through anyways, but that might be a bug.

i understand the argument you're making but i think unplayable video embed will cause more confusion than provide benefits for our users.

It can be useful though without confusing.

Let's say I am writing a blog post with a video. Uploading the video takes ages on my home broadband, so in the mean while I want to write my blog post and see the video embedded as-is. This is important for certain layout and styling issues I might want to try out.

In the end I can then either decided to bug my readers with a "this video is not YET available" message, or save my post as a draft and publish (or better: auto-publish) it later.
