Hey. I want to be able to search people based on more than a username.

I want to be able to type in a zip code or a city name and see people who live near me, or who live in zip codes near that zip code (or city/or state/or country). I want to find people with common interests, or hobbies, or whatever.

Right now all it seems I can do is surf from one of my contacts' contacts to even more contacts, without having much control over the people I'm trying to find.

Also, much like a browsing videos thing, why can't we have a "browsing people" thing which would bring up a bunch of random people and their statistics, and other information about them? If this is about community, I want it to be more about the people making the videos I watch.

I'm gonna feel dumb if this is already available.

have you tried creating/visiting groups or channels to accomplish these goals?
  • Adam Holwerda 2 months ago
Yeah, I mean. There are groups for big cities like New York and LA, but not everyone lives there. And I don't want to be creating groups and channels I don't want to maintain just to find anyone who lives near me. How much easier would it be to just be able to search by area? I'm sure there are hundreds of people I could be making friends with in my area who are on Vimeo, and are making cool videos, that I'll never know about. The video searching criteria is already pretty good, so why not expand that to include searching for people as well?

I'm not a stalker, not yet at least, I just think it would be really neat to find people in my area, age group, or who share interests outside of making videos.

    Would this be possible?

with adam's suggestion, it's easier to find people who might want to join that group :P

but in general, it would be handy because not everyone has joined a or the right group, plus i doubt if it would have any use to make a group for a town or small city. but with adam's suggestion you still can find people near your town easily and, i don't know, form a film crew and make your own production!

and if privacy is an objection, you can give the users control over what they want to share with the community or the search engine

I have a feeling this is an impossible request.

I'm going to be pitching a community page that will allow for finding people via location, common interests, related videos etc. Won't be for a while, but its something I'm thinking about.

I support adam's request. I think it can be very useful.
Hope you can work on it.

I actually just came to the forum to make this request too. It would be great to be able to find members in your area, zip code/city/state/country/hemisphere, ok maybe not hemisphere :) to chat and maybe collaborate on projects with. Especially for those of in that wide swath of country between NYC and LA or in rural areas like myself.

Simple question...how can you change the text in the invitation to ask people to join? People won't know my user name and I want to substitute my first name in the message.

Yeah, I still wish this existed. But I still think maybe the functionality for it was never planned, so to put it in now would be horrendously difficult. And I'd like to thank Brandon for using the word "swath" so I didn't have to.
