    Hi,

I just want to know, if it is hypothetically or technically possible to have vimeovideos with 5.1 surround sound? dolby digital, aac, ogg, whatever?
If there is an hd video the good sound shouldn't be missing ;).

    So, is it possible?

It is a Flash limitation. When Flash supports 5.1, *and* the tools that Vimeo uses for transcoding to Flash supports 5.1, then it is possible. But so far, the tool that Vimeo uses, ffmpeg, doesn't support 5.1. And even if ffmpeg adds 5.1 support in the near future, it will only be for a few formats. This means that you are looking for another 5 years before you see that feature used online.

Are you recording 5.1? I would probably guess that less than 0.1% of vimeo uploaders have ever recorded 5.1 sound, much less mixed it. The bandwidth required to stuff 6 audio signals into the upload with decent video is not trivial either, which is why most video formats don't support 5.1.

aac and ogg have nothing to do with "good audio" or 5.1 and dolby digital, unless someone here is filming dual system feature movies, isn't going to happen either.

Good sound has a lot more to do with taking care with the audio than the upload format.

perrone, I didn't asked about "good audio" I just asked, if it is possible for the "system" vimeo used.
And if your are talking about percentages of what uploaders here and elese uses, then we wouldn't even need the hd mode.

    greets, Andreas
