Gary Hurst was born in South Africa in 1964 and grew up in Canada and England. In 1997 he completed a masters degree in fine art at the Art Academy in Rotterdam. In 1998, after a year in New York, he moved to Berlin, Germany.
Hurst’s work is an investigation into the poetic and social dimensions of memory and time in the form of a lyrical cine-poems. Using hybrids of varied imagery, lyrical text and editing techniques, he handles video as a medium or substance, to mold and transform it to give the fragments (characters) a sequence in the form of flowing collages which disrupt our habits of seeing, offering spaces to remember differently.
