Georgia Potter
With a voice twice the size her little stature implies, Georgia takes to the stage with a candid grandeur that’s both endearing and addictive. The young wordsmith & her band of four gentle men deliver her versatile & occasionally epic compositions as a mix of smooth & punchy neo-soul & hiphop with tense, fragile indie-folk that reclines on a thick bed of poetry and philosophy. Her sound is injecting a fresh, vibrant new vision into the world of the solo female artist and though it may occasionally echo the likes of Lauryn Hill or Hollie Smith, it’s tied together with a charm that is completely her own. She hopes to always surprise you…
Georgia’s story however is not limited to the stage. Born 22 years ago in Aurukun, a remote Aboriginal community in Cape York Peninsula, and growing up in Brisbane with strong & influential Indigenous mentors around her has meant that the perspectives & reflections that show up in Georgia’s lyrics are often surprising for a woman of her age. They show a depth of understanding surrounding the complexities of humanity, cultural identity & tradition with a balance of criticism & optimism.
In January 2009 she wrote, recorded and produced the release of her debut mini-album Living the Grey which features seven of her compositions, an array of Brisbane talent and is just one example of Georgia’s abilities as a visual artist. Since its release Living the Grey has had strong support from Triple J’s Roots N All and Home & Hosed programs and was ‘featured’ on the Triple J Unearthed website and podcast. Works from the mini-album have also subsequently featured on Quicksilver Pro France coverage and selected for various compilations such as A-Venue’s Creative Juices CD, fRETfEST’s Best Of, Island Vibe Festival & West End Carnivale Compilation CDs. To conclude their November/December ‘09 East Coast tour, Georgia & the band recorded their homecoming show at The Troubadour, which has now become Georgia’s latest release, Live at The Troubadour, featuring her new, upbeat material plus live versions of some of Living the Grey’s most well-loved tracks. Both albums are available now through CDBaby.com, itunes and selected independent record stores.
Georgia capped off the summer with 5 hugely popular performances at the Woodford Folk Festival 09/10, leading on from her involvement with Woodford 08/09 and The Woodford Planting Festival in May 2009. In 2008 she opened for both Lior and South African protest singer Vusi Mahlasela at the Brisbane Powerhouse and has performed as part of UTribe Festival 2009, Valley Fiesta 2008, 2008 Brisbane Writers Festival and Island Vibe Festival 2007, 2008 & 2009. She has appeared on bills up & down the East Coast with other National and local artists such as Saritah, Jackie Marshall, Tommee (Tommee & the Neighbourhood), The Black Market Rhythm Co, Grassroots Street Orchestra, Andi & George, Rob Longstaff, 2006 Deadly Award Winners Banawurun (Troy n' Trevelyn) and has also developed a reputation for appearing at community events including Walk Against Warming 2007 & 2008 at the Brisbane Riverstage, Greenfest, Oxfam Walk Against Want and a host of events supported by the Brisbane Activist Centre & community radio stations.
Georgia also works part time for Education Queensland’s Indigenous Schooling Support Unit (ISSU) supporting & advocating for Indigenous Cape York secondary students who study outside their community. In 2008 she completed a Bachelor of Popular Music with the Queensland Conservatorium from which she gained extensive experience with recording technology & performing in a studio environment. Georgia also performs as a backing vocalist for Laneous & the Family-Yah, plays keys & sings with Gold Coast reggae band The Cool Calm Collective, Brisbane/Melbourne pop-funk act Yeo & the Fresh Goods and sharpens her traditional music skills with the jazz duo G-Roove.
