" Naeem Khan Autumn/Winter 2013 whose program promised Modern Opulence, inspired by the illustrations of the 1920’s Erte to the Grandeur of the Byzantine Empire. Very fancy and elegant.
The Byzantine era (330-1453) has had its moment on the runway before with Etro’s Fall 2009 and Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2011 collections with their use of rich fabrics and decorative gold accents. But what differentiates Khan’s interpretation is how he pulls inspiration from Erte, the “Father of Art Deco”, a Russian artist from the early twentieth century. While Erte was best known for fashion and stage design, you might know his illustrations, which for 21 years (1951-1936) graced Harper’s Bazaar’s magazine covers.Erte’s illustrations of the Byzantine fashion highlighted the intrinsic embroidery, rich colors in fabrics and mosaic beading, an aesthetic that lent itself so perfectly to the art deco fashion of the 1920’s.
Altogether Khan presented 47 outstanding looks that brought the audience to their feet for a standing ovation. It was a true collection, with a consistent theme weaved into each piece, with make-up and hair that complimented the pieces and the time. While most of the collection stayed within the black and blue color scheme, a few red and teal pieces stole the show.
