Shirotama Hitsujiya, Artistic Director of YUBIWA Hotel Performing Arts Company, playwright and designer. She founded YUBIWA Hotel in 1994. Shirotama Hitsujiya, Artistic Director of YUBIWA Hotel Performing Arts Company, playwright and designer. She founded YUBIWA Hotel in 1994. Since then, she has created over 50 performance pieces which were presented in alternative spaces including disused factories, tennis courts, bookstores, restaurants, and strip theaters, as well as in conventional theater facilities. The performers of YUBIWA Hotel are all female, and Hitsujiya tries to seek and suggest new views and images of society, the world and women.In 2001, Histujiya lived in New York City for eight months, receiving a fellowship grant from Asian Cultural Council. During the residency, she worked with local performers to create "Long Distance Love," a project that connected simultaneous performances in Brooklyn and Tokyo through the Internet. Toward the end of the same year, she also collaborated with Ong Keng Sen for "Dreamtime in Tokyo." In 2003,her work, "It's up to You" was presented at the Asian Women's Theatre Festival in Manila, where she also served as apanelist for the Asian Women Theater Directors' Symposium. In 2006, "CANDIES -Girlish Hardcore" was presented at the TBA Festival atthe Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and at the Japan Society in New York City as well as in the U.K. and Poland. She was named one of “The 100 Most Influential Japanese Women in the World” by “Newsweek Japan” (June 28, 2006.) In 2008,Later in 2006, she participated as a performer in the creation of Richard Foreman's"Deep Trance Behavior in Potatoland" as part of "The BridgeProject" in Kyoto. In 2008, her piece, "Please Send JunkFood" was presented in Brazil. She also created "Massive Water" while in residence at the Chapter ArtsCenter, UK the same year. Her work "X2," created incollaboration with Yoshiko Chuma, was presented in NYC in 2009 and 2010. Hitsujiya has also been working with Trista Baldwin to develop "Mesujika-DOE" since 2008.
