For over 150 years, New York City has attracted great minds in media and has been at the forefront of developments in media technology. This tradition continues today: New York is not only a global center of print, radio and television, but is the world’s hub for international computer networks and telecommunications.

Unlike traditional programs in film and video documentary, the IMA-MFA program encourages students to explore a wide variety of existing and emerging forms. Students learn how to best communicate their messages in the rapidly evolving contemporary media environment. Projects by students in the program have ranged from public exhibitions, performances and screenings to online networked game environments to rich media for pdas and cell phones.

From intimate personal stories with universal human appeal to global collaborative networks to in-depth media critique, IMA-MFA students work to bring resonant messages to the medium.

The curricular objective of the program is to educate twenty-first century media activists, artists and pamphleteers, people capable of conceptualizing, creating and distributing innovative, politically and socially engaged expression using contemporary media technologies. Working with a range of faculty with film, video, new media, and journalism backgrounds, students build intersections of effective practice through their coursework and personal interests.
