Since the food price crisis of last year, commodity prices have fallen while retail food prices remain high. Contrary to claims of food processors, retailers and others quick to criticize agriculture commodities, commodity prices have a much lesser impact on consumers’ cost of food. The economic benefit of declining farm commodity prices and reduced energy costs are being pocketed by food processors and retailers without passing those savings on to the consumer.

Global food and financial markets are now characterized by high levels of instability and volatility, demonstrating how important it is to have multilateral rules for ensuring that markets work correctly. In particular, the anti-competitive behavior of supermarkets needs to be much better regulated, and trade-distorting behavior better addressed. Further, speculation on futures markets in basic food commodities has played a large role in contributing to the food price crisis, which has also demonstrated a need to limit commodity market speculation.

The IFAP Commodities Conference addressed these pressing issues facing farmers’ organizations worldwide and highlighted the entrepreneurial and innovative solutions farmers are taking to develop sustainable markets and systems, while identifying best practices in risk management. The IFAP Commodity Groups and the Young Farmers’ and Women Farmers’ Committees reviewed their activities since the last IFAP World Farmers’ Congress in Warsaw, Poland in May 2008 while defining their vision in the run up to the IFAP World Farmers’ Congress in the summer of 2010 in Algeria.
