Stop Motion

‘As individuals and as a nation, we now suffer from social narcissism. The beloved Echo of our ancestors, the virgin America, has been abandoned. We have fallen in love with our own image, with images of our making, which turn out to be images of ourselves.’

-Daniel J. Boorstin

Looking back, this video is clearly not a show of pride or vanity. It's a compression of 3 years of fighting intense body hate. This is a very private, personal relic of my own twisted narcissism, and I decided to share it with the world. This was me at my worst, trying desperately to snap a "good" picture so I would forget, for a moment, to bully myself. Its been over 2 years since I finished this video and I've changed quite a bit since then. My obsession with selfies has dwindled and my overall self-confidence has risen. Photo Booth was not the catalyst for change, rather, it was a tool by which my sense of self could be measured. Not every photo in it was driven purely by self-criticism. Some of them are purely happy, driven only by curiosity or alcohol. But still, this video is a stinging reminder of how powerfully internalized body-hate can rule your life. And hey, it looks cool with the music.
