Museum and Exhibition Concepts

University of Iceland, April 23 2013.
This lecture discusses the insights archaeologists can gain when visiting zoos, over and above the contribution archaeologists can make to the study of zoo history. Like archaeology, zoos deal with evolution, human origins, cultural memory, authentic specimens, reproductions and landscapes, among other topics. Both are also very much about material culture, in particular built environments, and about conservation. In this presentation I discuss some convergences and surprising differences that throw new light on both zoos and archaeology.
