SYNOPSIS:
"Noah and Russell are two art students caught in a generation that is far past the old world of white-collar life goals but currently in the throes of commercialized subcultures. With no room to grow on their own without a path already carved for them, they quit college, flee the city, and head to a cabin in the woods of northern Wisconsin to escape the paradigm and pursue a greater creative plane. While there, the wilderness begins to close in around them and the two begin to drift into a state of surrealism."
ABOUT THE FILMING:
In the woods of Northern Wisconsin, four friends who met at film school escaped to a cabin for two weeks to make a feature film by themselves using the most limited of budget and resources. Nor the plot to a meta film about the hardships of filmmaking, but an actual experiment-cum-creative process that was berthed from an almost relentless interest in pushing the boundaries of what "should" or "could" be done.
Robby Massey and Derek Mungor conceived of a picture, which wouldn't present the viewers of its ideas, but invite them to develop their own based wholly on their subjective experiences. Aided by Ralph Jimenez and Darren Orlowski, they approached each sequence in the picture both with an open mind -- ready for improvisation and direction based on feeling -- and a careful attention to detail -- making each choice carefully as to not reveal too much of a discernible theory. Robby Massey and Derek Mungor's respective theories, in fact, were purposely not revealed to the other until well after the picture was finished -- a choice made to insure true misdirections and no solid through-line. (The true through-line, as it is, possibly will never be revealed.)
Far away from a normal process, the four worked long hours every day, almost blurring the line between the downward spiral the picture's story was taking and their own shoot. Takes were shot of scripted action and let roll well into the conversational improvisation. A few hours on careful construction of a scene of dialogue between the main characters would give way to visual exploration of the lake and forest, capturing long takes of the free-form ideas that would present themselves. Many fires were built and few outside connections were made among the two weeks, all aiding to the experience of...Desolation Wilderness.
