Music Videographers

The folks from Rock Plaza Central were in Kingston for the Apple Crisp Music Festival in March 2009. They agreed to do a video without knowing much about what they were getting themselves into, I think. On one of the first spring-like days of the year, I arrived, as usual, with all my video gear loaded into the back of the bicycle trailer and walked into Next Church (the venue for the evening's show). Soundcheck was starting a bit late which pushed the schedule off a bit and meant that the usual crew (Greg and Josh) were running around getting dinner for the bands and doing their own soundcheck at the moment it was time to shoot.

So there I was, flying solo. We didn't have much time and we couldn't stray far from the venue. So, I decided to set-up across the street from the church in front of what I consider to be a Kingston landmark, the home of Rose and Dick Deshaw. Dick is a former prison-guard/ philosopher and Rose is a longtime writer and Raging Granny who has penned a number of political songs for performance at protests and other political gatherings. When I came to the door to ask if we could shoot outside their home, Rose greeted me warmly and told me she had just finished writing a condom song.

Their house, recognizable for the vines that wholly embrace it, was a popular used bookstore run by Rose and Dick until the ice storm in 1999 destroyed their collection of books. It seems a suitable location for Rock Plaza's performance. I shot this in 20 minutes and finished before Greg arrived with the food. Enjoy.
