CODE for offset expression:
offset = -.5;
//The offset in time, negative half a second.
p = thisComp.layer("My Animated Layer");
//The parent layer
t = time + offset;
//The current time minus half a second
//Value of the parent's position property at the current time minus half a second

Code for multiple layers with slider control:
offset = thisComp.layer("YOUR LAYER").effect("YOUR Slider Control")("YOUR Slider") ;
//link everything between = and ; to the SLIDER CONTROL in YOUR comp
t = time + offset * index;
//index is the layer number
//be sure this is linked to the layer with the animation in YOUR comp
