You will be presented with a three (3) minute prologue video (the “Prologue”) produced and directed by Vincent Laforet. For Chapter 1, you will be asked to create an original video submission (the “Submission”) starting with the still image depicted in the final frames of the Prologue (approximately the last five (5) seconds of the Prologue) to continue the story. For each subsequent Chapter (Chapters 2 through 6), you will start with the still image depicted in the final frames (approximately the last five (5) seconds) of the prior Chapter’s winning Submission, which will be announced immediately prior to the current Chapter Submission Period.
To submit your entry, you must (i) log-in to your Website account, (ii) complete the submission form, (iii) reconfirm your agreement to these Official Rules, the Website Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and affirm that you have received permission for the use of the image/likeness of any and all identifiable persons appearing in your Submission, and (iv) upload your video file. You will be required to submit written releases (provided by Sponsor and available via a link on Contest pages within the Website) signed by each identifiable person appearing in your Submission granting Sponsor permission to use his or her image/likeness if your Submission is being considered as a semi finalist in the Contest. Submissions that do not include all required information and adhere to the Official Rules as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion will be considered void. Once uploaded, Submission will not be returned. Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, remove, delete and/or disqualify any Submission it deems inappropriate or otherwise non-compliant.
The Submission must be shot in HD-720p or higher, be no more than four (4) minutes in length, contain no copyrighted material, be no longer than 500 MB and provided in one of the following file formats: MPEG, MOV, AVI, WMV.and must end using a final static image for approximately five (05) seconds. Finalists may be asked to provide the original audio and video files used during production of the entry for broadcast purposes. This may include uncompressed QuickTime files, final audio mix and/or separate audio tracks for dialogue, music, and effects. These items are not mandatory to become a semi-finalist, finalist or Winner.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Submissions must be primarily in English or use English sub-titles.
- The person whose name appears on the Website user account will be deemed the entrant ("Entrant"). The Entrant is the one (1) person who is listed and owns the email address in the Website user account. If any group elects to collaborate on a Submission, they are required to designate one (1) person as the agent of the group to enter the Contest, agree to these rules and accept the prize on behalf of the group. Neither Sponsor nor any of the Contest Parties are liable for any disputes between collaborators arising under or related to the Contest.
- Each individual Entrant is allowed a total of one (1) Submission per Chapter during the Promotional Period. Each Submission must comply with the Website’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, as well as these Official Rules. In the event of any discrepancy between these Official Rules and the Website’s Terms of Service and/or Privacy Policy, these Official Rules shall govern for all matters pertaining or relating to the Contest.
- Each Submission must comply with the Website’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, as well as these Official Rules. In the event of any discrepancy between these Official Rules and the Website’s Terms of Service and/or Privacy Policy, these Official Rules shall govern for all matters pertaining or relating to the Contest.
- Each Submission must be the original work of the Entrant produced for this Contest; it may not have been entered in or won previous contests or awards; it may not have been published previously in any medium; it must not infringe any party's intellectual property or other rights; it must not contain obscene or pornographic material; it must not include threats to any person, place, business, group or world peace; it must not invade privacy or other rights of any person, firm or entity, and it must not in any other way violate applicable laws and regulations.
- Each Submission must not utilize live animals unless the Entrant has obtained the consent of the animal's owner and an affidavit from the animal owner or wrangler that the animal was not harmed in the making of the commercial. Entrants are encouraged to contact the local Humane Society prior to filming the Submission to verify appropriate animal safeguards on set.
- Each Submission must not contain any copyrighted works (other than those owned by the Entrant). Accordingly, unless scored by Entrant or if Entrant possess written authorization from all applicable copyright holders, you should not include any music in your Submission. Use of any unauthorized music may result in disqualification of Submission, in Sponsor's sole discretion.
- Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to (i) remove or blur, or to ask the applicable Entrant to remove or blur, any non-material elements (e.g. small logos on clothing, artwork hanging in the background, etc.) or (ii) remove or replace synchronized music, rather than disqualify an otherwise compliant Submission.
- If in Sponsor's determination it is necessary or advisable to make minor, non-material adjustments to an otherwise compliant Submission to comply with Sponsor specifications or requirements for airing, Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, elect to do so, or may ask the applicable Entrant to do so.
Submissions may be reviewed for content before being published or judged; however, such review does not relieve Entrant from responsibility for compliance with all of the Terms of Service and these Official Rules. Submissions that do not comply in all material respects with the Terms of Services or these Official Rules or that otherwise contain prohibited, or inappropriate content as determined by the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, will be disqualified, will not be published or will be removed from the Website, and will be ineligible for prizes. Sponsor makes the final determination as to which Submissions are eligible to take part in this Contest and be considered for a prize. Certain Submissions may be featured from time to time on the Website or on one or more websites of Canon’s choosing during and following the Contest Period, in Sponsor's and Canon’s sole discretion; being selected as a featured Submission on any website is unrelated to the Judging Criteria and does not guarantee selection as a semi-finalist, finalist or winner in the Contest.
Any other attempt at Internet entry is void.
No responsibility is assumed for lost, late, incomplete, stolen, misdirected or illegible/corrupt entries; or for any computer, telephone, cable, network, satellite, electronic or Internet hardware or software malfunctions, or unauthorized human intervention, or the incorrect or inaccurate capture of entry or other information, or the failure to capture any such information.
4. LICENSE
As is noted above, in addition to these Official Rules, all Entrants and their Submissions are subject to the Website’s Terms of Service, specifically including (but not limited to) the Video Uploads section found therein. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the following modifications to the Terms of Service (among others found throughout these Official Rules) shall apply to Submissions to the Contest:
- The licenses granted in and to Contest Submissions shall extend to Vimeo and Canon; the licenses granted to users of the Website shall extend to users of any website of Vimeo’s or Canon’s choosing;
- The license to create derivative works shall extend to the right to incorporate Submissions into a larger audio-visual work; the copyright in and to the complete work shall rest with Canon.
- The entitlement to use Submissions for promotional purposes shall be unrestricted, and shall extend to Vimeo and Canon;
- Contest Submissions shall not be removable by Entrants and, accordingly, the license granted in and to Submissions shall be non-revocable and perpetual;
- Contest Submissions may not be designated as “private”;
5. JUDGING CRITERIA/SELECTION OF WINNERS
The winner of each Chapter will be selected via a three-pronged judging/voting process, conducted during such Chapter’s Judging/Voting Period. The three prongs of the Judging/Voting Period are: (a) judging to identify the semi-finalists; (b) judging to identify the finalists; and (c) identifying the Submission with the highest number of votes for the relevant Chapter.
-
Semi-Finalists Selection. Once Submissions begin to be received, a committee of three (3) persons comprised of employees of Sponsor, Grey and/or Canon (the “SF Judges”) will judge all eligible Submissions in order to select fifty (50) semi-finalists per Chapter (each, a “SF Submission”), based on the following:
- Cinematography (25%)
- Storytelling (25%)
- Best incorporation of initial still and quality and evocative nature of final still (25%)
- Best use of camera/equipment (25%)
In the event that there is a tie which would result in greater than fifty (50) Submissions chosen as SF Submissions, Sponsor will either (i) allow for more than fifty (50) SF Submissions, so that all Submissions with judging scores placing them in the top fifty slots proceed to the next judging prong; or (ii) disqualify the final otherwise-qualifying score, and submit less than fifty (50) SF Submissions to the next judging prong.
In the event there are fewer than fifty (50) eligible entries, all eligible entries will be deemed SF Submissions and will be submitted to the next judging prong.
All Entrants whose Submissions have been selected as SF Submissions will be required to submit the release(s) that each Entrant had acknowledged possession of at the time of submission, which are signed by each identifiable person appearing in the Submission and grant Sponsor and Canon permission to use such person’s image/likeness. Sponsor will notify relevant Entrants that their release documentation is required by email, messaging to the Entrant’s account on the Website, or by publicly announcing the SF Submissions on the Website. Once notified by any of the aforementioned means, Entrants will have 48 hours to submit their signed releases to Sponsor. If the required documentation is not in order, or if the documentation is not returned within the designated timeframe, the relevant SF Submission will be deemed ineligible to be selected as a Finalist Submission (as defined below), and will be disqualified during the second prong of the Judging Period (finalist selection).
The SF Submissions shall be submitted to the next judging prong within four (4) days following the end of the Submission Period for the relevant Chapter.
-
Finalists Selection. A committee of five (5) persons comprised of employees of Sponsor, Grey and Canon, and/or independent filmmakers/artists (the “Finalist Judges”) will judge eligible SF Submissions in order to select five (5) finalists (each, a “Finalist Submission”), based on the following:
- Cinematography (25%)
- Storytelling (25%)
- Best incorporation of initial still and quality and evocative nature of final still (25%)
- Best use of camera/equipment (25%)
In the event that there is a tie which would result in greater than five (5) Finalist Submissions chosen, the Finalist Judges will consider each of the top-scoring SF Submissions based on the following additional criteria. If, after judging with the additional criteria, there is still a tie which would result in greater than five (5) Finalist Submissions, Sponsor will allow for more than five (5) Finalist Submissions, so that all SF Submissions with the top five scores proceed to the next judging prong.
In the event there are fewer than five (5) eligible SF Submissions, all eligible entries will be deemed Finalist Submissions and submitted to the next judging prong
Tie-Breaking Additional Judging Criteria:
- Originality (33%)
- Plot development (33%)
- Set selection (33%)
The Finalist Submissions will be identified and submitted to the next/final judging prong within eight (8) days following the end of the Submission Period for the relevant Chapter.
-
Chapter Winner Selection. Once selected, the five (5) Finalist Submissions for each Chapter will be listed and identified on the Website. Members of Vimeo will be given five (5) days to vote (the “Voting Period”). Limit one (1) vote per Website visitor per Chapter. The entry that receives the most votes will be declared the “Chapter Winner”. In the unlikely event that the voting results in a tie, the Finalist with the highest score from the previous prong will be declared the Chapter Winner. The Chapter Winner for a particular Chapter will be identified on or before the commencement of the Submission Period for the following Chapter. The Chapter Winner for the final/sixth Chapter will be identified on or around 15 days following the final Chapter’s Submission Period. Subject to these Official Rules, the Entrant who submitted the Winning Submission shall be declared the “Chapter Winner” for the relevant Chapter. Subject to these Official Rules, there will be six (6) Chapter Winners, one for each Chapter, and each Chapter Winner will receive the Chapter Grand Prize.
Entrants agree that the Sponsor has the sole right to decide all matters and disputes arising from this Contest and that all decisions of Sponsor are final and binding. Entrants, by submitting their Submissions, agree to release, indemnify and hold harmless the Contest Parties from any and all liability, loss, damage, cost or claim relate to any allegation regarding their participation in the Contest including, but not limited to, the awarding or their acceptance or use of any prize, and the use (including the reproduction, display, performance, editing, distribution or the creation of derivative works) by any of the Contest Parties of their Submission(s).

No prize transfer, assignment or substitution by Chapter Winners is permitted. If a Chapter Grand Prize (or any part thereof) is unavailable, Sponsor, in its discretion, reserves the right to substitute the original Chapter Grand Prize (or the relevant part) with an alternative prize of equal or greater monetary value, unless to do so would be prohibited by law.
Odds of winning a prize in this skill-based contest will depend on the application of the judging criteria referred to in Section 5 above to the eligible Submissions received.
7. GENERAL CONDITIONS

The Story Beyond The Still
It was the first ever and largest user-generated HD video contest in history, where photographers became filmmakers and we all saw beyond the still. Month after month, aspiring filmmakers were invited to pick up where the previous winning short film ended – on an evocative photograph. Contestants then reinterpreted that still, telling the story that lived beyond it in a short film of their own. Then, after the final chapter was created by Vincent Laforet and all the chapter winners, the collective film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
