Encouraging everyone (from K through CEO) to look with care

As the field of design research matures, an exciting new activity is emerging. Seasoned practitioners are extending their knowledge and passion to non-specialists of various ages and backgrounds. In this talk, Bill Lucas presents stories from LUMA Institute, an educational venture dedicated to helping everyone from K through CEO learn and apply the practices of Human-Centered Design (including the critical activity of looking and listening with care). He talks about the wonderful things that happen when experienced professionals facilitate workshops aimed at raising the awareness and competence of people from all walks of life.

Bill Lucas teaches design and develops curricula for LUMA Institute, an educational company dedicated to helping everyone (from K through CEO) learn and apply the practices of Human-Centered Design. He also serves as the inaugural member of the Professional Practice Fellows Program at MAYA Design, a US-based technology and innovation lab. Over the past twenty years, Bill has designed product/service offerings, communication programs, and educational experiences for a wide range of organizations, including Corning, General Dynamics, Merrill Lynch, Whirlpool, DARPA and the US Postal Service. Bill holds a B.S. in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude from the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.
