Independent game developers are awesome. Not only do they create amazing games (often with impossibly small development teams, if not completely solo), but they're open and friendly when it comes to the development process and their tools as well.

Indie devs share their tools, share code, and often simply open source their games so other developers can examine and learn from the code. Last but not least, their games often have the weirdest and most interesting trailers.
