Lucky 13 Studios / Joseph Dunphy Created by Lucky 13 Studios / Joseph Dunphy

The name "Lucky 13 Studios" started out as a joke. When I started joining groups on Vimeo, I found myself being the thirteenth member to join unusually often.

I won't be uploading to this group for a while, because I'm between jobs, creating budgetary problems, and also because there is preparatory work I must do first, both in improving my writing and photography.

But I will use this group eventually, very lightly at first, but more and more seriously over the next few years. It is going to serve as a kind of blog, surrounding my video making activities. What those are going to be, I don't

What those are going to be, I don't know yet. I'm content to find that out along the way.

If either I can learn to do the needed animations, myself, or find a qualifed collaborator to do them for me, there's an excellent chance that I'll do some Mathematics videos. These would start with Calculus, and go upward through maybe the third level of graduate school. Yes, I am qualified to make these, at least as a Mathematician; videography is much another question.

I've long maintained that the intuitive understanding of the subject is given short shrift in teaching, and that's what the videos would be focused on - giving the viewer a feel for why the proofs work. The viewing of these films should not, however, in any way be viewed as being a substitute for reading the proofs, which will be made available on a companion site I'll be creating for my vimeo membership. If I do go this route, we'll be looking at Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Probability and maybe a little Analysis; most likely no Topology, Geometry or Algebra (as in Group Theory, not as in simultaneous linear equations).

Cooking videos, I can just about guarantee - but nothing likely to appeal to the Betty Crocker Crowd. Expect to see mostly a kosher, gluten free mix of French, Spanish, Latin American, Middle Eastern and African cooking. Chili peppers will be making an appearance, often. Hellman's mayonnaise, never.

I'd like to do some theatre pieces, but in addition to being short on funds, I'm short on cast members. I, myself, will never appear in the pieces, for reasons that should become clear if you start following one of my fiction blogs over the next year, aside from the obvious - even professionals have trouble directing themselves, and I'm not a professional.
