In 210-209 BC some 8000 terracotta warriors, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses
were buried with the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, near Xi'an, in Shaanxi province.
The first sculptures were discovered in 1974, the majority are still in the pits, likewise many non-military figures and objects.
The Emperor's tomb remains unopened.
Exposed to the air, the life-sized figures, originally painted with bright pigments, lost color.
