This is done with the awesome kineme3D tools for quartz composer by loading a "multi-obj" fbx file over an iterator, and controlling the amount of iterations with an interpolate to make the objects "grow". This IS dependent on the way that the structure of the object is organized/created, because the technique will load obj in the structure in order, or really by whatever you use to drive the iteration value. I'll try to get to posting an example file of this technique a bit later today.
