NLG International Committee

Eric Sirotkin's Ubuntuworks Created by Eric Sirotkin's Ubuntuworks Plus

The NLG International Committee supports legal work around the world "to the end that human rights shall be regarded as more sacred than property interests." As lawyers, law students, and legal activists, we seek to change U.S. foreign policy that threatens, rather than engages, or is based on a model of domination rather than respect. The Guild assists movements in the United States and abroad that are working to realize a more just world.

The National Lawyers Guild was active in the fight against fascism in the 1930s and ‘40s, and in standing up to Cold War hysteria in the ensuing years.

It has opposed U.S. military interventions and U.S. policy on nuclear weapons, and has supported national liberation movements.

Whether constitution-making in South Africa, protecting judges and lawyers facing death threats and intimidation from the Philippines’ to Pakistan, building bridges for peace in Korea, challenging the Cuban embargo or taking steps to challenge the incursions in Gaza, the Guild is active in educating, litigating, and truth-seeking toward the end of social justice. Through its work with the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) and the Guild’s own International Labor Justice Working Group, or the American Association of Jurists (AAJ) or other progressive bar associations around the world, members interact with lawyers and activists who are making a difference.

Guild delegations play an active role in international conferences, including recent gatherings in Cape Town Havana, Durban, Pyongyang, Seoul, Lima, Paris and the World Social Forum in Brazil. Fact-finding delegations provide valuable first-hand accounts of conditions in areas harmed by U.S. or corporate policies, and bring an alternative perspective back to schools, community centers and congressional hearings. By supporting the efforts of allied organizations on the ground and advocating for enforcement of international law and ratification of international treaties, the Guild works to reshape U.S. policy to that of peacemaker and partner, while demonstrating the increasingly interconnected nature of our world.

Get involved with us today and be part of building a more peaceful and just world.

"Your support and encouragement has been a great encouragement to us at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.” Desmond Tutu on the Guild’s work in South Africa
