This video shows as far as I got with this investigation so far. Starting with an explanation of Cellular Automaton constrained within a grid it goes on to show how this might be applied using responses to a designed environment to propagated. These reactions can be used to test proposed design scenarios and investigate the effect that each formalised proposal has on the generated informal growth.
