Iconic sculpture by Antony Gormley 'The angel of the north' stands 20 metres high and has a wingspan of 54 metres. Standing on a hill overlooking the A1, it is seen by over 90,000 motorists a day! Built in 1874, Penshaw monument was built in honor of the first earl of Durham, John George Lambton, who was also the governor of the first province of Canada!
