This was one of my final film projects for my Motion Picture Directing class at Saint Augustine's College. Our professor took us to the NC Museum of Art to view the Norman Rockwell exhibit. Our assignment was to pick one of his paintings and use it as an inspiration for a short film, maximum of four minutes long.
"Pickaninny" was inspired by Rockwell's Girl at Mirror which was the cover for the March 6, 1954 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. In the original painting, a young girl sits at a mirror with an open magazine on her lap turned to the page of a glamorous model. It's the theme of measuring up to societal standards of beauty.
