NKP 765 traveled around the northern portions of the Norfolk Southern system in 2012 to help celebrate the railroad’s 30th anniversary. Ferry moves occurred during the week, and special trains for NS employees and their families on many weekends.
We accompanied 765 on one of these journeys. Our program begins at 765‘s home near Fort Wayne, IN. The big 2-8-4 traveled over the old Wabash to St. Louis, MO. Two of the NS Heritage Units came along for the outbound trip and also on the weekend employee excursions. Heading back to Fort Wayne, 765 shed most of the leased passenger cars and pulled the train without any diesels.
