For story, the Beijing-based filmmaker Lei Lei (Raydesign.cn) collaborated with his father, Lei Jiaqi, a well-known book designer in Jiangxi province. Having recently read a family history written by the elder man, Lei Lei proposed a project that would allow the two to share stories and translate them as jointly-made drawings. With Jiaqi’s ballpoint pen illustrations overlaid with Ray’s colored pencil, the result is an inter-generational interpretation of memory. An accompanying animation uses photographs taken by the father during the drawing process, manipulated using Flash by the son.
Born in Jiangxi, Lei Lei is a graduate of Tsinghua University’s Academy of Arts and Design. Alongside numerous independent projects, he has created work for Nike, Microsoft and others. This video is just the beginning of the project, In the future, Lei Lei will keep on doing the animation documentary for his family history.
