World, Travel & People HD

This July I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Havana, Cuba with a 14 & under soccer team from my island hometown Key West, only 90 miles north of Cuba. My younger brother plays on the team, and when I heard that they were travelling to Cuba to play in a tournament against four club teams in Havana, I made sure to offer a spanish speaker and a videographer for the cause. Two other soccer teams from Key West made the trip--one a 14 & under girls team and the other a 12 & under boys team--making a total of 80-something people on the trip.

The 14 year old boys team ended up winning two games and losing two games in the tournament, but the whole adventure was a great experience and the Cuban people were very welcoming. Apart from the four soccer games, we explored Habana Vieja, encountering interesting, warm people, visceral Cuban rhythms, colorfully antiquated Spanish architecture, street soccer games in cathedral courtyards, and all varieties of delicious Caribbean fruit. We were also able to make a day trip some 100 kilometers West to Pinar del Río en Las Terrazas, a beautifully green tropical wildlife preservation, and another day trip 120 kilometers East to Playa Varadero in Matanzas.

I particularly enjoyed the music that we came across in Cuba, and though I wish I could have documented more, I at least managed to record enough to use for this video. With that said, all music, aside from the second song which I wrote and recorded, was recorded on location. The fourth song heard is an original composition written and performed by Trio Ruvela (the three man band in the bar).

This trip was a great experience and I look forward to returning to Cuba in the near future with a smaller group of people and for more time!
