guru studio was founded in 2000 with a mandate to create the best and most innovative character animated entertainment. The company has recently undergone a dynamic period of growth and creative evolution.
Conceived as a boutique commercial + broadcast operation with a handful of artists, guru has recently expanded their operations to become a diversified creative services company specializing in animation + design for television, film and internet based media. The studio now employs over 70 people dedicated to this purpose. One of the most exciting results of this growth is their emergence as an entertainment company focused on developing new concept-driven creative properties that are media independent.
In 2007 guru hired Mary Bredin, a former executive at Disney International in London, to spear head the development + acquisitions of new properties. guru recently announced a development deal with a Canadian Broadcaster for an in-house original project called JUSTIN TIME. They’ve also embarked upon the creation of a series of in-house short films. YEAR OF THE POLYGON was showcased at the 2007 Ottawa Animation Festival as well as the annual Pictoplasma Character Design + Animation Festival in Berlin. Previous broadcast design character projects have also been featured in a DVD/Book “Characters In Motion”, “Applied Arts Magazine” and on the DVD compilation “Stash”.
Other original properties recently completed or in production include a short film about the future called PANOPTICOM, an action/comedy series for teens called AGENCY 13, BUDS - a preschool series featuring 5 charming characters set in a microscopic world, as well as a collection of comedy concepts and interstitials for the adult demographic.
guru maintains an impressive roster of international clients including advertising agencies, major brand clients, broadcasters and development companies such as DDB NY, Ogilvy and Mather, Draft FCB Chicago, Leo Burnett London, Kraft Foods Inc., Proctor & Gamble, Tropicana, Kellogg’s, YTV, Teletoon, Cartoon Network, Hallmark Entertainment as well as Nick Jr. and Corus/Nelvana on the Emmy and Gemini award winning series THE BACKYARDIGANS.
guru has also begun production on the brand new Nelvana/Entertainment Rights co-production, GUESS WITH JESS, a spin off from the much loved Postman Pat® series featuring Jess the cat and a new cast in an innovative new program developed for pre-schoolers. guru continues their successful contribution to THE BACKYARDIGANS with their largest team ever on Season 4. Other long form projects include a holiday feature for a U.S. studio and major broadcaster.
guru’s aim is to continue to expand their love of characters by bringing new offerings to the advertising and entertainment markets and services that leverage our narrative animation and design talents across the traditional and emerging opportunities in screen based media.
