(all maggie davis videos on behalf of at-risk animals were filmed and edited on an iphone 4)
for over twenty years, i celebrated the interconnectedness of all life in my books for readers young and older, no matter fiction or non-fiction. (see the signature below.)
i have worked with special needs children and adults, co-owned and co-managed a nationally known concert bakery cafe and, for sixteen years, have been a volunteer community caregiver on my downeast Maine peninsula.
currently, as an animal well-being consultant and practitioner, i devote myself to providing services for the voiceless—at-risk animals in particular—whether the nature of their challenges be physical, behavioral, emotional, or situational.
for no charge, i make educational/inspirational videos on behalf of these animals, my intention to capture their true essence beyond any pain or sorrow they may be experiencing—this, so they might become more adoptable. filming at-risk animals and interviewing directors and staff of heartfelt non-profits caring for them, i hope to inspire increased donations and volunteer support for these groups.
more . . .
--i've lived full time on a working farm, on a house boat, cottage by the sea, two motor homes--now in one of the east coast's last working, struggling, fishing villages.
--my children and grandchildren love me and i, them. (we must travel to be together.)
--there are no gurus in my life. anyone is capable of offering wisdom, i've found, including those who most would consider to be unlikely candidates.
--i've taken responsibility for my own health for over thirty years (using herbs, homeopathy, my understanding of the healing properties of food, and much more) and work cooperatively with my physician whom (i am grateful) i rarely see.
--years ago, i built a cabin in the woods. i dug old boards out of junk yards and bought windows and doors and stained glass from trucks and those taking down old beautiful houses (so many of which deserved to be left standing). this i did after letting the feel of the land announce to me where my cabin might best be and, mindfully as i could manage, after clearing most of the thinnish woods with my bow saw.
--sixteen years ago, sparked by a trip I was moved to take, i co-founded a joyful non-501(C)3 band of neighbors providing (in the thirteen towns on our downeast maine peninsula) free, health-related assistance to those ill, dying, incapacitated, heartsick individuals who fall between the cracks of the health-care system. now that good extends to a fresh-hope Neighborcare program for animals and their human companions who struggle to care for their animals and keep them.
--i appreciate art/photography that's more than the sum of its parts, good music of any kind (love playing pennywhistle ballads, either solo or duet)
--i live spontaneously; at the same time, i value order.
--i like long walks and camping. sailing's great, though I'm no expert. i love kayaking; years ago, in the everglades, roseate spoonbills ten feet from me, on shore.
--other joys: cooking, dancing. singing, watching and reading uplifting accounts of those who in obvious or invisible ways change the world for the better. with my puppet friend Ratch, interactive conversations with young people regarding their animals and all their feelings. familiarizing myself, deeply, with other cultures. traveling anywhere i'm called to. (i also love staying put.) being in the company of soulful friends and those i’ve just met i feel i’ve known forever. )
--i embrace solitude, and enjoy solitary or companionable silence, animals (the more the better) and people who respect and love them and act on their behalf, warm laughter, genuineness, groundedness. for me, witnessing/affording tender, spontaneous, non-dutiful, acts of kindness is the greatest show in town.
because the nature of my not-for-profit videos for children and adults is not only educational but inspirational, i often include parts of selected love songs to stir the heart (sorry to say that so far i have not found what i’m looking for in the Vimeo Music Store). i have read copyright law and hope Fair Use applies—this, so my videos are not removed.
“Digital recordings and images found online and definitely protected by copyright law can be used as part of non-profit and educational projects as long as the entire work is not used.”

This personal, practical book reminds us that true caring neither starts nor stops at the bedside, but extends to all life. It is fiitting for caregivers both lay and professional, including physicians, nurses, homecare providers, parents, teachers, clergy---all of us who want to nourish each other in ways we can feel. A Garden of Whales by Neighborcare co-founder, maggie davis, is in its fifth printing. Follow a young boy's imagination as he dreams about the magnificent whales of the sea--and worries about their future. Young readers will be drawn into his quest to help the endangered whales and will delight in his fantastical plan to fill the sea with whales again. This unusual story celebrates the interconnectedness of the human and animal worlds.
"This tale of deliverance unfurls in luscious prose that rolls trippingly off the tongue. Like a contemporary 'Kubla Khan' for kids . . ."
--Publisher's Weekly
"A young boy, fearful that whales are disappearing from the earth, imagines how they might be saved. His dreamlike solution is conveyed by a rhythmic text and lush illustrations that feature cavorting, majestically powerful whales. The poetic, somewhat surreal quality of the story is appealing."
--Horn Book
