jason.sloan is a new.media artist working from Baltimore, Md. His work explores various aspects of spirituality and it's connection to life, death, memory, religion and our transitory time on earth. Through his performances, installations, net.art works, audio environments, video work, network actions and sound recordings, he examines the need for transcendence beyond the body through a vehicle of visual ritual and aural stimulation. With this dialog, Sloan feels an urgency to evoke a collective experience between the viewer, listener and artist that can bridge the gap between the virtual, physical and non-physical worlds. The focus of this transcendence is not to conform to any current religious trends or beliefs, but to take a non-dogmatic approach of artistic and intellectual inquiry that explores the basic human need for some type of spiritual alignment or wholeness.
In 2002 Sloan co-founded SLO.BOR Media with sound artist & web designer Matt Borghi as a vehicle for their individual releases and a platform for other artists. SLO.BOR Media is primarily a record label, but focuses on a variety of media and forms of distribution. SLO.BOR Media is also quite concerned with packaging, design, new media, and conceptual art.
Sloan received his BFA from Edinboro University in 1996 and his MFA from Towson University in 1999. In addition to being the recent recipient of a $3000 Maryland State Arts Council's Individual Artist Award, Sloan's performance, installations, network and video works have been exhibited internationally including New York, Kiev, Berlin & Saint-Petersburg, Russia. His sound works have been released on various labels and can also be heard on numerous international radio programs.
He currently is a professor in the Interaction Design & Art department and the coordinator of the soundArt program at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland.
