Around 9 months a year I am out home. Travelling around the world, most focusing Asia. For the last three years I've been taking pictures of Buddhist Murals in Thai Buddhist Temples. I've been all over Thailand searching for temples. From deepest south (Pattani, Narathiwat...) to the northern most tip of Thailand. And Isan, of course, the wonderful land of the North-East. Up to now 140 wat (temples) visited and about 17000 pictures taked from them. Some of the temples are in very remote areas. I discovered real treasures, both in the walls and in the heart of people I'd met. I believe some of these precious murals were never photographed before. At present (2011) I'm searching for old Khmer ruins in Thailand. The most remote ruins and most hardest to find. Some ancient temples are located in dangerous places, like ones hidden in the thick jungle at the border between Thailand and Cambodia. Historical masterpieces which are a tug of war between both countries.
I was born in the bosom of a farming family from Sant Boi de Llobregat, 12 km away from Barcelona. Even when I was a child I felt a penchant for books more than for the farm land. I read Joanot Martorell's "Tirant lo Blanc" when I was quite young and probably that was the book that stimulated my passion for travel and adventures. In 1973 I opened La Plana bookshop; a shop which was not a simple business as we all understand it. Inside, we held a lot of exhibitions, conferences, recitals, Catalan and guitar courses, book presentation ceremonies and even cinema forums. In 1986 and 1987 I progressively left the bookshop aside to travel for two whole years around the south-east of Asia. In 1988 I went back to the bookshop and I ran the business until 1995, when I definitively parted with it. Since then, I have devoted myself exclusively to travelling, writing and taking pictures. As soon as I left the bookshop I went to Colombia. I travelled around the country for three months. With Belize, Guatemala, Mexico and Brazil, I have travelled around America for half a year. In 1983 I travelled around the Algerian desert in a Land Rover. I have travelled for long periods around Egypt and Morocco. I've been to Syria, Jordan and Turkey, a country that I try to visit whenever I can. My first contact with India happened in 1977, as well as with Nepal. I''ve visited several nature reserves to the north of Australia. Since 1991 I've travelled on numerous occasions to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar. The Malacca peninsula and the north-west of Borneo are zones which I know quite well. I've covered the north of Pakistan and I've also been to Sri Lanka. I've travelled around the Philippines for a year and a half and more than two years around the Indonesian archipelago. I've also spent more than 1500 days of my life travelling around Thailand. I've collaborated with Els viatgers de la gran Anaconda (The travellers of the great Anaconda), a radio programme of Catalunya Radio station. I took part in it for six seasons weekly, as a Traveller on Motion. I’ve published 4 books about my travels, all of them in Catalan language. You can find them in my personal website: jaumemestres.cat/. I have my own channel at YouTube: youtube.com/user/barakasin?feature=mhum
