10 days agoJeremy Schulz commented on Batman Rant — Flip UltraI wholehearted disagree. The skin tones are much less flattering in this video, and the macro block/compression artifacts in the fabric of the seat and the darker midtones in the skin are very distracting. In the Flip's defense the Kodak video has a better composition/tighter shot overall, and 16:9 always looks better to my eye.

Your work is one of the reasons I'm pursuing time lapse so heavily at the moment, so thanks for commenting (and for your work -- my telescope mount arrives today).
I could have sworn I'd read advice to use auto-exposure over at timescapes.org . My concern was that the lighting intensities are so drastically different between pre-dawn and mid-day, that no manual setting would cover the required f-stop range. Some people have mentioned manually adjusting the camera's setting while shooting, but I'd like to avoid that since I'd like to potentially shoot for an entire day. If flickering occurred between images, there are post techniques to deal with that issue, within reason.
I felt that my main mistake was going with aperture priority mode. I generally default to this, because I like to control my depth of field, and I shoot all of my HDR/bracketed imagery in this way. However, because this tells the camera to compensate via shutter speed, my interval is thrown off, which disrupts the fluidity of the motion. Next time I'll probably try shutter priority and vary aperture, since DOF doesn't really concern me (clouds, at least those with detail, effectively being of infinite distance) and I trust that variations in the sharpness of the lens across the full f-stop range won't really matter that much when shooting 5K and scaling down to 1080p.
