Joaquin Montalvan was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised in Alhambra and Pasadena. He studied film making and acting at U.C.L.A..
During the making of "Skinhead" (his first documentary which screened at Sitges in 2003, made its U.S. premiere at Dances With Films, and went on to screen at Big Bear International Film Festival), he discovered he would rather be creating images from behind the camera, instead of acting in front of it. "Visual Futurist: The Art & Life of Syd Mead" subsequently won him the Audience Award for Best Documentary at Dances With Films 2006 with the highest rating in the festival's 9 year history.
He has since reemerged into the world of narrative feature film making with a Psycho-Spiritual Thriller titled "Mobius" which is available on DVD, and recently finished his second Psycho-Spiritual Thriller "HOLE", which premiered at The Director's Guild of America.
