John Dyer is a professional photographer based in San Antonio. Early influenced by the work of Russell Lee and Garry Winogrand, he has spent his career documenting the people and culture of San Antonio, South Texas and his native Montana, in addition to commercial work for national magazines, advertising and corporate clients. He has produced photographs for, among others, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Elle, Fortune, Business, Money, Texas Monthly, Mas, LA Magazine and Travel & Leisure. He shoots
annual report photographs for many of the Fortune 500 companies and works for many national advertising agencies. John’s work has been selected for publication in American Photography, Print Magazine (Certificate of Design Excellence), Communications Arts
Photography Annual, Graphis Photo, Flash Magazine (Creative Excellence Award) and HOW Magazine (Self-Promotion Award).
John is the author of two books, Conjunto, a celebration in environmental portraits of an important, indigenous roots music specific to South Texas, was published by the University of Texas Press in October, 2005. 65 large photographs taken from John’s
Conjunto book were exhibited as the inaugural exhibit at the new Museo Alameda in San Antonio. The Museo Alameda is the first Smithsonian Institution affiliate outside of Washington, DC. El Vaquero Real, The Original American Cowboy, tells the story of the
Texas Vaquero, his lifestyle, history and culture. It was published by Bright Sky Press in September, 2007. John is presently at work on a new book about San Antonio.
